ROAD BOARDS.
OXFORD. The usual fortnightly meeting of this Board was held on Friday, November 26th. Present—Messrs Sladden (chairman), Bon* nett, Wilson Eisher and Luers. The clerk's report was read and considered. The grade of Baxter's Hill being 1 in 6£, it was resolved—" That it was too steep for a practical road, and as it would require considera- < ble outlay to obtain this grade, the work should not be done." The concrete shoot at the creek at Mr Wilson Fisher's was allowed to stand over for the preaent. It was resolved to open a drain on the road between the education reserve at Yiew Hill, put a shoot in at the river, and a ford at the end of the road to take the water off the Woodstock road; forming Main Bush road, opposite Moßriar's seotion, to the full width to stand over; to fence culvert at Mahon's on the Four-chain road; to put in a log culvert on Nalder's road, and a ford and cut a ditch to i take the water over Starvation road; also, to fill in culvert on Perham's road. The assessment of the district and making rate roll was then discussed, the Board being of opinion that the clerk should make the roll. The clerk said he was quite willing to do the work, and had told the ohairman on a former occasion that the clerk was the proper person to make the roll. It was resolved—- " That for the year ending August 24th, 1880, in addition to his other duties the clerk shall assess the distriot, and make out rate roll." The following correspondence was read: — From Mr Jeffs re opening hole in his fence. From Mr Davis about survey. From Mr Lewthwaite, re land taken for road on Wharfdale road. The olerk was instructed to point out to Mr Lewthwaite that his letter does not contain the nature of his claim, and if suoh claim were stated the Board would consider it. From Mr Lough, offering to put in four footbridges for the roller. The offer was refused, but the Board would be prepared to accept a fair offer for oash. The following persons waited upon the Board. Mr Baxter, about forming the road to bis residence. He was informed of the decision of the Board, Mr Baxter asked if a road could not be formed whether the Board would make a footpath. The Board would consider the matter and give him an answer. Mr Ansell, asking for Sladden's road to be extended 12 chains. The work to be tendered for. It was resolved that all persons reoeive notioe to clear the gorse from the formed roads of the distriot. The olerk to have proper notice forms printed and served as soon as possible. To inform Mr Baxter that the Board would spend a small sum to make a footpath as requested. To call for tenders for claying Stiffen's road near the drain, and prepare estimates of a bridge over the drain at this place. Accounts to the amount of £258 14s 8d were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned. MOUNTSOMERS. At the meeting of the above Board held last Monday, it was resolved to make plongh furrows in all fenced roads in No. 2 ward, and to construct protective works above the Valetta to the Spread Eagle to protect the road through the dry river bed on the east side of Taylor's stream, Mr Corsbie, on behalf of Mr Tooth, having promised to contribute £lO towards the work, and also oart all material to the ground. Valetta, Mesopotamia and Polhill roads were ordered to be repaired as soon as possible. Mr Taylor was granted permission to run water from his water race across Roods and McLymouth's road, provided he made provisions for preventing an overflow in times of storm water. Mr Corsbie asked for a drain to be made on the Alford Station road. The surveyor was ordered to report on the matter. With regord to a movement for the separation of the district into two road districts which is on foot, a petition opposed to separation was framed and the clerk ordered to obtain as many signatures to it as possible previous to forwarding it to his Excellency the Governor. Letters were read from Mr J. Tisoh, Mr J. Boyle, Ashburton County Council and Upper Ashburton Road Board. Tbe olerk was instructed to prepare a balance-sheet, a return of expenditure, the mileage of roads formed, and submit them to a speoial meeting, to be held on the 21at inst. The following tenders were accepted for the following works:—Tramway road, Alford Forest, D. Forbes, £l4 8s; Morrow's road, D. Forbes £4l; maintenance of ford, Hewson and Cook's, £3O. Accounts to the amount of £265 17s 2d were passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned.
