Eecent English files bring us tbe particulars , of the Newmarket first October meeting, j The Hopeful stakes ((for two-year-olds) went j to the Count de Lagrange, with the aptly { named Maskelyne, by Albert Victor, out of , Palmistry, and on the second day the great ( foal stakes of 1000 sovs. went to Eobert the | Devil, Bendor being second, and Muriel (by , Parmesan, out of Oheviiannoe, dam of Jannette), third. This victory of Robert the ( Devil seems to prove most satisfactorily that ( Mr Brewer’s colt is quite the best of the two 1 j be having defeated Bendor in the Leger, and , the race under notice. The Great Eastern , Eailway Handicap fell to that very popular { owner, Lord Hastings '(who must not be con- ( founded with the Lord Hastings of Lady Elizabeth celebrity) with the aid of Fire King. The , Triennial Produce Stakes was won by Thebais B daughter of Hermit, and the Newmarket ( Handicap went to Elf King, by Joskin, out of t Queen Mab, who, by the way, is the dam of ] Mr Stead’s mare Titania. The Bous’ Memo- , rial Stakes fell to Lord Falmouth and Archer with Bal Gal, the speedy daughter of ( Adventurer and Oartiniere. At the second October meeting, the Clearwell Stakes fell to | Bal Gal, the Oesarewitoh, as telegrams have already informed ns, to Eobert the Devil, and the Middle Park Plate to Mr W. S. ( Orawfurd’s colt St. Louis, by Hermit out , of Lady Audley. Lord Eosebery ran second with the Doncaster—Euxine colt, and Mr Perkins’ ( Imcy Glitters, by Speculum out of Bicycle, i was third. Bal Gal and Maskelyne were t among the contestants. Latest telegrams inform us that the Autumn Handicap was ( won by Sir J. D. Astley’s three-year-old black colt Microphone, who beat Cradle a head. The latter in her turn defeated Gil Bias two lengths for second place ; eleven started. In the race for the Champion Stakes Robert the Devil again asserted his supremacy over Bend Or, who finished second, Esveller being third. Mr Lorillard has purchased the chesnut horse Mortemar by Oompiegne, dam Oontesse by The Baron, a good performer himself in his time. He is the sire of Clementine, St. Christopher (winner of the Grand Prix). Verneuil (winner of the Ascot Gold |Oup3 Vase, and Alexandra Plate), and Ohamant (winner of the Two Thousand Guineas. Mr Lorrillard’s countryman, Mr James E. Keene, has recently purchased thirteen very high class mares in England, and sent them to his American property. They have all been to first-class horses, and are supposed to be in foal. Mr Keene has made his dehxit on the English turf with some success, as his colt, Bookmaker, won the Granby Stakes, a success which Mr Keene followed up by winning the Bedford Stakes with Foxhall. War Paint, another American bred filly by Unoas, secured her second winning bracket in the October Nursery Stakes, which she won very easily. Winning Mounts. —Fred Archer tops the 'list of winning mounts for the season, so far, with 78 wins out of 220 mounts. I notice that one of old Aglaia’s progeny has won a good race in England.
