A return relative to Messrs Barnes and Co.’s contract with tho railway department shows that £3899 has been paid them for material which the Government could have obtained for £I2X6. The Commissioner of Customs thinks that the number of holidays in his department is a rascally shame, and intends to reduce them one-half. Mata and Oambalio have been scratched for all their engagements at Sandhurst. The contractor for lowering the roadway from George street to the circular quay unearthed a headstone to the memory of a seaman of the first fleet. The date is—“ Ship Sirius, 10th July, 178— (blank), aged 46.” The elections are now half over. Of the sixty members returned, thirty-five were members of the last Assembly. Not all the remaining twenty-five are new to Parliament, as Messrs G. A. Lloyd and Sutherland are ex-Ministers. The most notable rejection has been Mr David Buchanan, for West Sydney. The Speaker has been re-elected, and of the Ministry, Sir H. Parkes, Messrs Wisdom, Sutton, Baker and Watson ara re-elected already. Of the leading Oppositionists, Messrs Fitzpatrick and Eurnell are returned.
ADELAIDE, November 24 A block at the corner of Bindley and Ring William streets, on which stands the old Bank of Adelaide, has boon sold for £30,500 to the Hon, Alex. Hay. BRISBANE, November 24. The Hon. John Douglas, ex-Premier, has resigned his seat in he Assembly. At a dinner given by the “ Hansard ” staff, on Tuesday, to the principal shorthand writer, the printer, in responding to the toast of his health, stated that a quarter of a million more copies of “ Hansard ” was printed this year than last. The Government officials in North Queensland are making efforts by means of presents and otherwise to bring about friendly relations with hostile aboriginals. The export of sugar for the past season amounted to 5500 tons. Three boys, equipped with revolvers and provisions, absconded from Rockhampton a week ago, one stealing £lO. The police are searching the bush in the vicinity. A meeting of Cooktown residents urged the Government to avenge the Now Guinea atrocities, thirty Europeans, besides Kanakas and Chinese, having lost their lives there during the last four years, together with Cooktown property valued at £12,000. The Town Hall was draped with black and the meeting was largely attended.
