[By TbiißSEaph.] JTia Bussell.l SYDNEY, November 25, The Mayor of Sydney and the " Herald " have received from the Irish Land League cable messages, asking them to publish the fact that the Lord Mayor of Dublin has opened a subscription through "Freeman's Journal " in order to secure a fair trial for Mr Parnell and the others about to be prosecuted for participation in the land agitation. The trials will commence immediately, and the expenses of defence will bo enormous. Similar cablegrams have been received in Melbourne. The death sentences on Peter Felix for the murder at Stanthorpe ; on Sampson Fox, for wounding with intent to kill at Deniliquin ; and on Walker, for murdor at Tamworth, have been commuted to imprisonment for life. The condition of Mr Norton, the police magistrate at Dubbo, who was recently shot by his paramor, is extraordinary. He is paralysed and speechless, and the bullet is in his skull, but is undiscovered. He continues to maintain a high vitality and cheerfulness. The elections are about half through, and are generally monotonous. A determined effort was made to soonre the rejectment of Sir H. Park.es for East Sydney. It resulted in his being elected by a bare majority, being last on the successful list. ' MELBOUBNE, November 24. The Kelly-Gaunson episode is now fairly before the Assembly by a petition from Ballarat. Mr Orkney has given notice of motion respecting the removal of Mr Gaunson from the Chairmanship of Committees, a proceeding which is not favorably regarded by the Beform League party. Eleven hundred residents of Ballarat signed the petition. BBISBANE, November 24. The publisher of the "Australian," the newspaper against which a verdict of eight hundred pounds was given for libelling Mr Lukin, editor of the Courier, has filed his schedule. Six New Caledonian escapees have arrived at Fraser's Island. Four were French, one was Spanish, and one Italian. They made the passage in eighteen days, and for the last three had no provisions or water. They had a sun-dial and compass and an atlas, and knew their position accurately. The Hon. John Douglas, ex-Premier, has resigned his soat in the Assembly. ADELAIDE, November 24 The searoh after the Natives who attooked tbe party at Burrows' Creek, in the Northern Territory, is abandoned, the rains haviDg obliterated the tracks. With reference to the anxiety expressed relative to the safety ot Ernest Giles' exploring party, it is now stated that Giles is in Price Mourico's employ, and has instructions to examine a wido extent of leased country, and that he has a number of oamels and ample provisions.
[Per s.s. Te Anau, at the Bluff.] A portion of the Australian News, per the above ship, was given in our yesterday's issue. The following are additional items : MELBOURNE, Novomber 23. The phylloxera committee visited Q-oslong yesterday, and mado a minute examination of the vines in that district. They established beyond all doubt that the vines are suffering from the disease in its worst form. Unfounded reports have been spread at Benalla to the effect that the Kelly sympathisers had attacked the police station at Greta. A strong force of police are still in that district, where quiet generaUy prevails. Chief Justice Barry died this morning from carbuncle on the neck, after an illness of a few days only. This morning's papers state that he was progressing favorably last night. Responding to a telegram from the Australian Eleven, the Victorian Cricketers' Association is about to select fifteen to play the Eleven in Melbourne on December lObh, 11th, and 13th. SYDNEY, November 23. Captain View, late of the schooner Nebula, of Sydney, arrived at Cooktown to-day. He reports that his vessel was wrecked on September 2nd on Kolumna Island, Jonsida group. The crew were saved. The captain and live men proceeded in an open boat to Teste Island, where the missionary informed them that Captain Foreman and the crew of the schooner Ann Brooks, from Cooktown, had been murdered at Brooker Island that month, and the vessel, with a valuable cargo of beche de mer, the proceeds of five months' work/destroyed. A party of French naturalists from Cooktown were also murdered in Jannes Bay, Maltby Island, n-nd thoir boat and collections destroyed. They had given no provocation. Captain View brought the wreck of the Chinese junk, Aroma, whioh the natives pirated last July. The Rev. Chalmers supplied the materials for temporary repairs, and enabled the castaways to reach Cooktown. Those killed in the Annie Brooks were Foreman, Burkes, Mcßae, Campbell, Hoskings, Jeffries, two other Europeans, and three Chinese. The Frenoh party consisted of Auguste Mandon, John Chambrook, and other Europeans.
