Thb Dbedoe fob Otago Habboe.—A letter by the ’Frisco mail, under date 10th September, states that the new hopper dredge for Otago harbor is all framed and partly plated, and its machinery proportionately advanced. The letter adds:—“lt is creditable to the spirit and plack of New Zealand that they should have in progress the most advanced and largest dredger in the world, and the like of which Europe has not.” With regard to these dredgers, which are the patent of Messrs W. Simona and Co., Renfrew, a report by the Government engineer at Ceylon regarding a proposed ship canal between the mainland and Ceylon (peaks as follows : “ The type of the dredgers I would recommend should bo similar to the screw dredger Grenore, constructed by Messrs Simons and Co., Renfrew. This vessel has cut a channel of one mile in length and 400 ft, in width, through the bar at the entrance to Carlingford I>ough, Ireland—notwithstanding the tide and exposed channel swell. This bar is composed of boulder stones, varying in weight from three to four tons, and so cemented together by marl and blue plaster clay as to resemble masonry; and it is reported that this dredger, in six working days, removed 17,650 tons, and one day not less than 4660 tons.” There is, therefore, remarks the “ Daily Timo>,” hope for our 60ft. bar yet.
