BOARD OF HEALTH.

The Board of Health met yesterday afternoon, after the Drainage Board, there being present—Mr B. J. S. Harman (chairman), Messrs P. Hobbs, H. J. Tancred, O. Cuff, William White, H. J. Hall, J. Brans Brown, J. V. Bobs, and O. B. Blakiston. The Secretary read the following letter from the medical staff: Chrißtohurch, October 16,1880. To the Chairman, &c, —I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of your letter inviting the consideration by the staff of the necessity wmoh exists for tie provision of some hospital accommodation for cases of infections disease. The medical staff is fully conscious of the desirable? ness of having the accommodation to which yon allude ready for us«, in case it were required. At the same time the stafE would urge you to bear in mind that small pox cases should not be received within the precincts of the present Hospital. Moreover, they (the members of the staff) are of opinion that should small pox unfortunately visit our shores, and no other accommodation was in readiness, it cpuld be treated intents, upon some elevated and isolated situation, a method which history and experience prove to be best, both for patients and attendants. James Irving, M.D., Sec. Medical Staff. The letter did not call for any immediate action. A petition was read from J. Hewitt and others for the removal of Mr Hanoock's soap and candle works and boiling down establishment, which was characterised as an abominable nuisance. The matter was referred to the chairman, with power to aot. Mr Boss drew attention toa letter which appeared in the public press in reference to the Papanui school. Mr Harman said he had taken the matter into consideration on seeing the letter, and had instructed the inspector to visit the sohool. The aotion taken by the chairman was approved. Mr Hobbs reported, in reference to the question of the inspector's salary, that the committee appointed to consider the subject had not been able to agree, and had determined to refer the matter back to the Board.

He would move —" That the present system of charging all moneys expended for the purposes of Publio Health Aot generally oyer the whole distriot should be adhered to."

The question at issue, which had been discussed at some length on a previous occasion, | and was now considered at length, was as to ! the division of responsibility regarding the matter of inspection, in view of the fact that > the powers of the Board had been delegated to Christchurch city and the borough of Sydenham, leaving only the Bub-districts to the local Board of Health. A difference of opinion existed touohing the desirability of maintaining a competent inepeotor at a proper salary under the circumstances, unless Christchurch and Sydenham were made to contribute as formerly a proportion of the expenses, it being pointed out that if the Board of Health dispensed with its inspector altogether, its sphere of usefulness and power would be so limited that it would be as well to vacate their position as a Board at once. The resolution was, after some dobato, carried, on a division by five to two, the dußentients being Messrs W. White and H. J. Hall. The Board then adjourned.
