The steam tug Lyttelton was yesterday pressed into service again outside of her regular employment. The emergency was in this instance the sudden death of a young man named Moore. Tne young fellow had been on a trip to the Old Country in search of health, and only returned the other day in the steamer Durham. He was so exhausted when the steamer arrived hare that he had to be taken to a friend’s house at Lyttelton. There he remained until his death, which occurred at noon on Saturday. His Barents are old settlers in Okain’s Bay, and they made every effort possible to engage a_ vessel to, take home the young fellow’s remains. The steamer Akaroa was unfortunately on the slip,' the Tongariro would not return from the river for some days, and the Bay in question was beyohd the limit to which the local steam launches are permitted to ply. As a last resort the Harbor Board .was applied to, and under the circumstances consent was given for the tug to be used. The vessels lying at the various wharves last night were : No. I—Opawa, Lutterworth, Waratah. 2—Tui (a.). 3—Spray. 4 Durham (s ). -6 Fawn. Island Lily. 7—Magellan Cloud. At the Graving Dock Jetty—Anthons. The Government steamer Stella arrived here on Saturday from Wellington, in command of Captain W. J. Grey, formerly in one of the revenue cutters. Captain Kersie resigned the position recently, and it is said is returning to England shortly. The Stella was on a lighthouse cruise chiefly, but she had six of the Armed Constabulary on board for Eipa Island, sent to relieve a similar number there, and after landing these, and taking in some stores for Akaroa, she proceeded South. ; The steamship Durham attracted several hundred people to Port yesterday, the appearance of the vessel’s deck in the afternoon somewhat resembling that of a man-of-war on an “open to the public” Sunday. The other attraction at the port consisted in the opportunity to take a run by water to Governor’s Bay, to which place the steam launch Lyttelton carried large numbers of people. Altogether the railway passenger traffic yesterday would exceed considerably that of any other day in the week. SHIPPING TELEGEAMS. Auckland, November 20, Sailed—Eeliance, ketch, for Kaiapoi.
