AUCKLAND SUMMER MEETING.
SPORTING NOTES.
Bt Sinead. In point of weather, attendance, and sport, the meeting just over was certainly one of, if not the very best ever seen in Canterbury, and not the least pleasurable part of it was the fact that nearly every owner placed some stake to his credit. Mr Stead carried off the lion’s share of the spoil with Le Loup, a horse whose career has been hitherto singularly unfortunate. On this occasion, however, he made up for past ill-fortune, by carrying off three of the principal events of the meeting, and has shown himself to be able not only to go fast, but to stay. Mr Hereford won a couple of races, and in La Mode, another daughter of Mer* maid’s, he has a right good filly, though I question, all things being equal, whether Hinemoa is not a better. It was a thousand pities that Hornby went off, and I fancy he will require a long rest before he can be himself again. I scarcely think either hlaritena or Bogardus will appear on any course again, but The Governor will make a useful horse, and f only hope the victories won on this occasion by his owner will be the precursors of many others. The Charm colt, Amulet was unfortunate in the Welcome, but he showed a tremendous turn of foot in the Nursery which he won easily. He has, to use a mild term, a very doubtful hock, but should he train on he will be hard to beat in the Autumn two-year-old events. Second and third monies were all that fell to the constant old Foul Play who, I scarcely think, could have been himself, but the season is young and I shall be much surprised if he do not score more than one big win before the curtain falls next April. Natator is still a good horse up to a mile and a half, as proved jy his Metropolitan Handicap victory, but I question whether that is not his outside limit. Mr Walters, in addition to showing us what a much improved colt Piscatorious is, threw in for a good stake with the speedy Billingsgate, who seems to have inherited the rare turn of foot over short courses possessed by both his sire and dam. The six starters for the Derby were certainly the best looking lot that ever faced a starter on this course, and the “ invalid,” Sir Modred, showed himself a grand colt. It was a capital race between aim and the flying little Virginia Water, whose time was good enough to win nine Derbies out of ten; but the son of Idalia won with a trifle in hand at the finish, in the quickest time on record here. Lure cut up badly all through the meeting, but I think this very magnificent filly will yet show herself superior to Lurline, that is, should she stand. Natator’s sister. Nautilus, is a picture to look at, but the company was too good for her. I can only express a wish that the gentleman who races under the name of Mr T. George may be more successful with her when she races later on in her own country, not alone for his own sake, but for that of his painstaking trainer, Ohaffe. There is a good useful horse in Badsworth, and I think he will prove himself an unusually good colt before the season is out. One always likes to see visitors have a fair cut in, and on this principle it was a matter of regret that Mr Redwood should have had such bad luck on the present occasion. His Derby filly, Amy, and a very nice filly too, went quite wrong only a few days before the meeting, while neither Norseman nor Miss Domett pulled off anything. Luna did Hr Butler a good turn in the Flying Handicap, which she rather unexpectedly won from Natator. The stable, I believe, threw in for a good stake. Few of the other horses engaged at the meeting require much comment, Betrayer excepted. The little brown ran fourth in the 0.J.C., but his subsequent performances were scarcely up to his usual form, so much so that I can scarcely think he could have been quite himself. Ohaffe informs me that the colt foal by Traitor out of Hilda broke his leg, and had to be destroyed. York has been purchased from Mr H. Goodman by Mr G. Osborne, He will probably appear for the first time in the colors of his new owner on the West Coast. The hurdle racer Hotspur has been sold to Mr J. Reid, of Oamaru, New Zealand. Mr Pierre Lorillard’s horses have returned to America from England. It is estimated that his career on the English Turf has cost him nearly 1,000,000 dols. A recent telegram from Auckland brings the intelligence that the Auckland Racing Club have appointed Mr E. G. Griffith handicapper for their summer meeting. The weights for the Hawke’s Bay Oup were declared on Tuesday, and I have only to say that, taken through his running in the 0.J.0. Handicap, Piscatorious should have little difficulty in disposing of his eight opponents. The handicaps for the principal events of the Dunedin Spring Meeting are to hand. Kildare, if he has not lost his old form, seems a good thing for the hurdles, though the still more aged Banjo should bo right in it with 9st. The St. Andrew’s Handicap should fall to Randwick or Adamant, and for the Spring I Handicap I like Hilarious. Acceptances close to-day.
