SPORTING.

ASHBUETON ANNUAL BA.OES. Second Day—Thtjbsday. Tho Ashburton sportsmen were again in favour with the clerk of the weather on Thursday, and for a Becond day the attendance was excellent. The officials, notably that most enthusiastic of country secretaries, were most sffioient in their respective duties, and the various events were got off with praiseworthy punctuality. The racing was much more interesting than on the first day, and Mr Griffith's excellent handicapping in the Consolation made a most interesting race. Sport commenced with the County Steeplechase, for which three went to the post. Mr Muir's pair, Tam O'Shanter and Lone Hand (not the Australian) were the moßt fancied, but Baven. the winner of a similar race on the previous day, and again well ridden by T. Lyford, won very easily. Had Lone Hand not refused, tho race would have been a very close one, but it is not probable the aotual result would have been altered. Three saddled up for the Eacing Club Handicap, which was virtually the only open race of the day. Band wick, though he went very unsatisfactorily in his preliminary, was certainly the favorite, the only other starters being Lone Hand and Lsghmohr. The two last named were in front for a mile, when the latter compounded. The big grey, very nicely ridden by J. Webster, made all the rest of the running, and though Bandwick's backers persisted in saying he was coming, he never got on terms with Lone Hand, who won very easily. For the District Farmers' Plate five accompanied Mr Maolean to the post, which should have been six, but Tam o' Shanter kept his horses waiting bo long that Mr Maclean oventually sent the field away without him. Minnie was a strong favourite, and, in spite of his indifferent performance on the first day, not a few fancied Zulu, who, his backers thought, would be better served by the lighter weight. Thanks to a really artistic finish on the part of Derrett, the despised outsider, Dagrid, just beat tho favourite a head on the post. The Open Farmers' Kace was a walk over for Bandwiok, while a trio weighed out for the Consolation. Tam o* Shanter, owing to his double misfortune, was, of course, comparatively speaking, a fresh horse, and was thus made a

favourite for the event under notice, though Topthorne had plenty of support. The two favourites out out the work at a slashing pace from the jump, when Zulu, who had been most patiently ridden by Derrett, came up and, though it was all out of him, he won it by about a length. Particulars of the Trotting Saoo will be found elsewhere. Details are appended:— County Steeplechase Handicap of 30 sovs; over 2 miles of fair hunting country. Nomination 1 sov; acceptance, 2 sovs. District horses only. Mr P. Husband's br g Kaven (Caledon — Lady Pale), aged, list 71b ... (T. Lyford) 1 Mr H. Muir's b g Lone Hand, aged, list 101 b (Joyce) 2 Mr H. Muir's g g TamO'Shanter, aged, l2st (F. Hedge) 0

Mungo Park was scratched. Mr Muir's pair at once went to the front, Raven lying back. They ran thus to the first hurdle, which Tarn O'Shanter refused. Lone Hand now led by a good distance past the stand, but refused at the next hurdle. This let up Raven, who taking up all his jumps in capital form, won very easily. Lone Hand came very fast at the finish, and made up a good deal of his lost ground, but the race was sever really in doubt after Lone Hand's refusal. Racing: Club Handicap, of 50 sovs; nomination, 2 sovs; acceptance, 2 sovs. Weights to be declared at 9 p.m. on the evening of the first day's racing. If miles. Mr J. Lunn's gr g Lone Hand (by Panic— Bertha) aged, 7st 71b ... (J. Webster) 1 Mr R. Mason's ch h Randwick, 5 yrs, Bst 101 b (Nolan) 2 Mr R. Pullar's b g Laghmohr, 5 yrs, 6st (Burgess) 3 Lara was scratched jnßt prior to the race. Betting slightly in favor of the steeplechaser. Laghmohr and Lone Hand made play two lengths in front of Randwick, the trio running thus to the back of the course. Here Laghmohr cried a go, and Randwick slightly improved his position. The weight, however, told its tale, and the big grey running very strong and well won easily. Time—Bmin. 16secs. Disteict Fakmebs' Plate of 50 sovs; weight sor age ; 1 mile. For district horses only. Mr M. Moreshead's ch g Dagrid, 4 yrs, 93t (Derrett) 1 Mr J. Smith's br m Minnie, 4 yrs, Bst 91b (Ranger) 2 Mr H. Friedlander's br c Zulu, 3 yrs, Bst (Demnth) 3 Mr G. Zulu and Minnie were quickest away, and led the rest of the field to the turn, when the lot closed and raced in company a good part of the way up the straight. A hundred yards from home Zulu's bolt was shot, and Minnie coming on, looked very like a winner, but Derrett bringing up Dagrid with a rush on the inside, won the best race of the meeting by a head, Minnie beating Zulu a short length for second place. Open Fabmebs' Plate of 30 sovs; weight for age; 1 mile. Mr B. Mason's ch h Randwick (by Barbarian— Gipsey Girl) 5 yrs, 9st 21b (Nolan) w.O. Consolation Handicap of 20 sovs; for all horses beaten at this meeting. 1 mile. Mr H. Friedlander's br c Zulu (by Daniel O'Rourke Wainui), 3 yrs, Bst (Derritt) 1 Mr J. Lnkey'a b g Topthorne, 5 yrs, 7st 71b (Demuth) 2 Mr H. Mnir's g g Tarn O'Shanter, aged, 93t (Lawson) 3 Tarn O'Shanter made play in front of Topthorne the greater part of the journey, Zulu lying back until the distance,: when Derritt brought him with a wet sheet, and he won easily by a length and a half. Topthorne was second, beating Tarn by half a length for that position. Time, lmin. 52sec. Prior to the start, Topthorne, in taking his preliminary, ran into the clerk of the course's horse, throwing Webster, who got rather a bad shaking.

TBOTTiua Eace (Hakdicajp) of 15 sovs ; first sots ; second horse, 5 sovs ; catch weights ; 3 miles. Nomination, 10s ; acceptance, 1 sov. District horses only. For this event only two saddled up, Jack being an absentee. Mr Digby's Jess won with great ease.
