CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

The quarterly general meeting of the members of the above was to hsv» been held on Thursday afternoon, but at twenty minutes past the boor those present were not sufficient to form a quorum, The members in attendance were Messrs A. O. Wilson (president), G. G. Stead, P. Cunningham, J. S. Jameson, F. Jenkins, L. F. Nathan, J. J. Fletcher, W. E. McDougal, J. D. Macpherson, Connal, and Toosey. The president eaid that, according to the rules, no meeting could be held, which was to be_ regretted, as he should have liked to have given a report on the questions concerning the railway tariff, which had been remitted to the committee to bring under the notice of the Government. A report had been sent to Wellington, and he believed he might say that to a large extent their reoommendatioDs had been attended to. The general question of rates of carriage was, he believed, still underconsideration, find as regarded the rate frock Ljttelton to Christchurch, as oompared with that from Port Chalmers to Dunedin, nothing had yet been done, nor had anything been done as the charge for native coal on the Govornment whatvee. With regard to carrying native coal, th6y had waited on Mr Maxwell, and were received perhaps, with less consideration than deputations were usually reoeived with.
