1 ebptsb’o TKLEOHAMS.j 1 [Per o.s. Rotomahana, at the Bluff. 3 COOKXOWN, November 6. The Brisbane has arrived from Hong Kong. A heavy storm was encountered by the steamer, which compelled her return to Hong Kong, She experienced terrific weather, and sustained serious damage. The steering gear was carried away, and the quarter-master, Mclntyre, was washed overboard. The lowest reading of the barometer was 29.38. Captain Riddell narrowly escaped being drowned. While fixing the steering gear he was washed through the port-hole and was severely cut. He was almost insensible for six days. For three days the heaviest weather that was ever known was encountered, and the cabins and saloons had 3ft, of water in them. At Yokohama lots of small crafts wore wrecked.
A great cyclone has occurred at Waiwen. At first the wind came in a perfect hurricane, and was succeeded by a great calm for forty-five minutes. Afterwords a gale sprang up from the south. The public buildings were unroofed. A large tree, one hundred years old, was completely rooted up and passengers were compelled to crawl on their bands and knees. Green fields and trees were scorched and withered. The barque Keek before the storm was in company with ton other vessels, but after the storm only five remained in sight. The vessel Beaman’s Bride foundered, and only two of the crew were saved ; they were picked up after being thirty hours in the water. The British vessel August arrived jury rigged, having experienced the typhoon. Bhe left Amoy on the 14th September, and on the 27;h fell in with a great typhoon. The crew had to cut away the mast, and three boats and the cabin fixings were all smashed.' Next morning they sighted two men on a piece of wreck, but were unable to render assistance. At a grand Council, held at Pekin on September 15th, the Western Empress decided that all those for war shall sign documents guaranteeing that should China lose, the subscribers shall pay any indemnity demanded by Russia. Since his Majesty is under age, and a woman cannot take the responsibility of declaring war, the document will bo sent to Hing Chong, the Grand Secretary, who favors peace. Java opium farms have been lot for a million guilders increase yearly.
