FROZEN MEAT.

TO THB BDITOB OF THB PBEBB, Sib, —Will you allow me a small space in your paper to urge upon our farmers and capitalists the importance of taking some prompt action in the matter of sending frozen meat to England. There is no question, I believe, as to our beef and mutton being rqual to the American article, nor of our hocks and herds of the future being likely to hold their own in competition with those of other countries. This country, also, is said by many to be better adapted for grazing than for grain growing. Surely, then, it is worse than folly to allow such an opportunity as the present, of restoring and of permanently establishing the prosperity of New Zealand, to slip through our fingers. Here are cattle, here are sheep, in thousands, ready to our hands; and, by all accounts, there is no lack of money waiting for employment. Victoria has commenced operations. Why should not we ? No single undertaking would seem more likely to improve the price of cattle, sheep, and land, and with tbeie to benefit the merchant, the revenue, and the whole country. Since writing the above, my attention has been drawn to an article in the “ Home News ” of September 24th, page 17, in which the writer says:—“ There seems to be at any rate a good opening for Australian meat shippers, but they ought to take immediate advantage of it.” “ All those interested in the Strathleven experiment, which proved so entirely successful, should put their shoulders to the wheel, and endeavor to extend their operations without delay.” “If Australia supplanted America, even temporarily, the latter might find it impossible to recover lost ground.” Knowing that many farmers are willing and anxious to help, and would take shares in any well-organised company, I leave the matter in your hands, knowing that you take a warm interest in anything calculated to benefit the country.—Yours, &0., H.
