ROAD BOARDS.

OUST. Tho usual monthly meeting was hold on November Bth, at 2 p.m. In the absence of Mr J. D. Dickinson, Mr John Buddenklau ■was voted to the chair. Thera were also present—Messrs Biddle, Grant, and Anderson. Correspondence was read—From the West Eyreton Road Board, repeoting some repairs to the West Boundary Road at Bennett’s. It was decided that the clerk sbould inspect end report thereon. From the Government, relating to the water question at Bennett’s. The matter was deferred till next meeting. From the Oxford Road Board, respecting the clearing of a drain on the boundary road, at Bennett’s. The clerk was directed to call for tenders for the same to ba done. Yarious letters were read relative to the Oust Main bridge oa the Mill road, and the case of Bennett v the Board, and it was finally decided to settle the matter with Mr Bennett according to the decision of the judge, Mr J. Taaffe, that gentleman having been appointed to decide between the two arbitrators. A letter relative to Carr’s case was read and considered, and directed to be brought before the Board again at its next meeting. A letter was read from Mr B. L. Higgins relative to the new railway tariff, and the clerk was directed to call a public meeting of ratepayers to be hold on Monday, the 22nd inst., at the Road Board office, at 3 p.m., to discuss the question, and the Board to hold a special meeting the samo evening at 6 p.m,, to receive tenders, &e. The clerk was directed to write to Mr Higgins respecting the water drainage at Bennett’s. Tenders for various works were opened and one in each case accepted. The clerk was directed to call for tenders, by the 220 d instant, for lowering the hill on the new Swamp road between the main road and the railway line ; also, for opening and clearing a drain on the West Boundary road at Bennett’s for about twenty chains. Mr Simon Hossaok waited on the Board in reference to the East Boundary road. The clerk was instructed to accompany Mr Wm. Anderson to that locality end report thereon; also, to give notice to owners of lend adjoining the main road, from Dimond’s

to Bennett’s, to clear off all the gone and any other matters growing or being thereon. Accounts amounting to £155 5s 5d wero passed for payment and the Board adjourned. ASHLEY. The usual monthly meeting of the above Board was held on Friday, November sth. Present —Messrs Hodgson (chairman), Cunningham, Dick, Croft, ond Brown. The following correspondence was read—From tho Kowai Rond Board re account Boundary road. The clerk was instructed to reply. From Messrs Joynt and From Public Works Office re closing of roads. From Mr A. H. Cunningham re Sinclair’s road. From Mr Milton re exchange of land for new road. The clerk was instructed to reply. From Mr Williams, asking for cuttings to bo improved on road through his property. Tho clerk was instructed to reply that the work would be attended to. From Mr O’Halloran, asking road to be formed near Wash Pool Gully. Clerk directed to reply that tho request would be complied with. Messrs M. Whatman and H. Gorrie waited on the Board, asking for road to bo improved near their land. Clerk to report. Mr W. Kennedy asked the Board to have fine remitted. Granted. Mr Daniel Jack asked the Board to have road improved near bis land; granted. Mr A. Rouse bad forfeit imposed for overtime in completing contract. The Board decided to reduce the rate of wages for manual and horse labor. It was resolved to give Mr Joseph Upritohard £2 for compensation for extra work done on Sinclair’s road. Extension of time was granted to Messrs James Brown, P. Brady, and E. Hohelty to complete contracts. Mr James Duthie was appointed surveyor to the Board for due month ; Mr Thompson to have leave of absence for one month. The Board decided to personally inspect Bullock Creek on November 15th. Tho clerk was directed to report on Sinclair’s road and road through TJpritohard’a land. Mr Carboy waited on the Board about cuttings on his land. Tho Board decided to meet Mr Carboy on the ground during the present month. Accounts to tho amount of £544 13s lOd were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned. LITTLE RIVER. The monthly meeting of this Board was held on Monday, the Ist instant. Present — Messrs Coop (chairman), Parkinson, and Judge. A letter was received from the Chief Surveyor in reply relative to the boundary between the Little River and Halswell districts, and stating that, as the lino marked on the map is only approximate, a survey will have to be made of the stream “rising on the western side of Oooncr’s Nob and falling into the river Halswell.” From Messrs Fenton and Wilkin, euiveyors, enclosing plan and description of proposed road near Island Bay (Wakamoa). From Dr. Doyle, with thanks for cheque on account of bridge erected by him over tho Halswell stream. From Mr Win. Gilmour, animadverting in forcible terms on the conduct of the Board in allowing Dr. Doyle to erect the bridge above mentioned. From Mr. Gilmour, drawing the attention of the Board to the condition of the Lower Taitapu roads. From the persons who had been accused of appropriating timber and stone, tho property of the Board, and repudiating the idea that in doing so they had any felonious intent. From parties living in Little River bush, offering to supply road metal. From thirty-four residents at Little River, asking for an extension of road in Western Valley. Mr William Bevins attended for tho purpose of getting his lease renewed for section 21205, including cottage, &c. Resolved that the petition of the Little River residents be deferred until next meeting. That W. Bovins’ lease bo extended two years from date, subject to further extension or otherwise, as may be decided upon. That tenders be invited for carting road metal for Okute Valley, also re-forming a portion of main road in Little River bush. The overseer having given notice of his intention to leave the service of the Board at the end of the month, it was resolved to invite tenders from persons desirous of taking the situation, duties to commence on January Ist, 1881, the overseer consenting to aot until the end of the year. Tenders were opened for reducing points and widening portions of tho main Christchurch road on tho margin of Lake Forsyth. Two of these were accepted, but the remainder being considered too high, it was decided to alter the specifications, and have tenders in on the Bth inst. This was done, and tenders wore accepted for the balance on that day, in presence of Messrs Coop, Forbes, and Birdling.
