THE PRINCE OF WALES’ BIRTHDAY.
TO THB BDXTOB OF THB PEBSS. Sib, —ln showing some southern friends round yesterday, they could not help exclaiming, “ What an exceedingly loyal community you are here in Christchurch,” on seeing all business places wide open on the Prince of Wales’ Birthday. And, indeed, I must say, now that I hare become a citizen hero myself, that I felt a considerable amount of shame and disgust about the matter, considering that it should not only have been a public holiday, but that it was also the Derby Day of our Metropolitan Spring Races. In Dunedin, Invercargill, Oamaru, and the smallest country townships of Otago —a Scotch community—the day is observed as a strict holiday, while in Christchurch, an essentially English town, the greed for business on such a day must be a lasting disgrace to the place, which, of all others, should set a loyal example to the rest of the colony. I am, &c., Loyalty. Christchurch, November 10th.
