CRICKET.

NEW ZEALAND v. THE WORLD. Such was the grand appellation of the Association match commenced on Saturday last, but it really signified that the cricketers who had learnt the game in New Zealand would contend with those who had acquired their knowledge elsewhere. Mr,Seoretan won the toss, and naturally enough took the innings, as the afternoon was all that could bo desired for the game and the wicket was good. Messrs Seoretan and Stevens first appeared, and commenced to score freely, the latter, however, was not in good form, _as several outs went dangerously high near third man andean easy catch at short slip was neatly dropped. After the first eight overs the scoring became slower, but it was not until 53 appeared on the board that Seoretan gave a chance to Oottorill at long leg. The retiring batsman 'gave one chance to short slip while he was compiling his score of 33, which was chiefly made up by a 4, four 3’s, and three 2’s. D. Ashby did not stay long, 1 b w being the umpire’s inexorable fiat. Two wickets for 61. E. Wilding made 3 before he played on. Three for 64. E. 0. J. Stevens was next to follow, being bowled by W. Frith. Four for 71, of which the retiring batsman made 28, by three 3’s, four 2’s, and singles. F. H. Morice failed to stop his first ball, a beauty from W. Frith, but B. T. MacDonnoll on this occasion was determined to stay. At 84, however, C. 0, Oorfo hit a half volley from W. Frith into his wicket. A. 0. Wilson filled the vacancy, and a good stand was made, but several catches by McDonnell were allowed to reach the ground safely. At last a ball from W. Frith found its way into McDonnell’s wicket, but not before his score had reached 35, made by a 5, a good on-drivo, a 4, three 3’s, three 2’s, &c. The end soon camo now, the last two wickets falling tor as many runs, the total being 131, Wilson being not out for 13, which includes two good square leg hits for 3 each. A few minutes remained for the New Zealanders to commence their innings, which cost them two wickets for 13 runs. The fielding of the New Zealanders was not good, seven or eight catches being missed which should have easily been taken. The bowling was steady throughout. The following is the score

The Probbleton men then went in, and tried hard to make up the required number of runs, but without success. J. Taylor and J. W. Prebble made the best stand, and played very carefully for 16 and 9 respectively. E. Prebble knocked up 12 in wonderful style, and G. Taylor stayed in a long time for his 6 not out.
