METROPOLITAN MEETING, 1880. Fiest Day — Tuesday. Stewards—Captain Clogstonn, Dr. Prina, P. Cunningham, J. D. Lance, J. Stndholme, L. Walker, W. H. Wynn Williams. Judge —M. Stndholme. Starter—J. Campbell. Handicapper—E. G. Griffith. Clerk of the Course—E. W. Millet. Clerk of the Scales —S. Garforth. Hon. Treasurer—G. G. Stead. The Metropolitan Meeting opened to-day with weather that could not have been better had it been ordered. Cool, gray, and pleasant, it was just such weather as the flyers of the turf could best display their powers, while it afforded every opportunity for the ladies to show off to advantage the rather striking colors in costume which are now so fashionable. The course, from the late rains, was in splendid order, a trifle heavy, perhaps, but still good going. The usual amusemsnts which have, at all our Canterbury gatherings, whether races or shows, become familiar as household words, were all there, and each and all were endeavoring to the best of their ability to conjure the nimble shilling out of the pockets of the visitors, who were all too ready to part and look pleasant. Tho attendance was fairly good, though not so large as might have been anticipated. Tho railway arrangements, under the able superintendence of Mr Back, wero perfect. There was no crowding, no trouble, but trains of extreme length left the Christchurch station paoked full without any more bustle or trouble than on ordinary occasions. Mr Millet, as usual, was perfect in orthodox pink as clerk of the course, and discharged the onerous duties of his position in a manner which must excite the envy of visiting officials from other parts. The Free Handicap was the first event on the card, and for this there were eleven entered. The Hon. W. Robinson’s handsome colt Natator had a bit the best of it in the estimation of the general public, though the uncertain York and Adamant had a following. The Crisis Lodge representatives. Mischief and Bogardus, were backed for a trifle by their friends. The winner, however, turned up in the northern horse Billingsgate, after a splendid race, only winning from Mr Goodman’s York by a short head. The Free Handicap. Harris) 0 The whole eleven came to the post, and there was some little trouble in getting them away, Mr Campbell having to call them back once or twice. Mischief, Billingsgate, and Adamant cut ont the running in the order named, the flag falling to a straggling start. After a short distance hsd been gone Natator came up, but did not stay, and Mischief sailed away with a strong lead, Billingsgate coming next, and after him Adamant, with the rest in a cluster. At the time Mischief still held a_ lead. Billingsgate and York being respectively second and third. In the straight. Billingsgate came away, with York, Natator and Adamant close up, Natator running into third place. A grand struggle ensued down the straight for home from the distance between Mr Walters’ colt and Mr Goodman’s horse, ultimately terminating in favor of Billingsgate by a short head, Natator third and Adamant fourth, three lengths off, the rest in a cluster in rear. Time—lmin. 45iseo. There were 121 £2 shares in the totalisator, of which thirteen were on the winner.

The Derby produced six starters, and of these Mr Fraser’s handsome Lure had the call in the general betting, though Virginia Water was looked upon as dangerous, and Badsworth was regarded as a good rough outsider. The Governor, as the representative of Crisis Lodge, had a f w friends, and Sir Modrcd was backed also for a little by those who believed in performances. The result proved that those who had pinned their faith to the blue and silver were right, as the Hon. B. Campbell scored the Derby with Sir Modred easily, a most popular win. Mr Webb’s filly, Virginia Water, started first favorite, and finished a good second, with Badsworth third, Lure fourth, the Governor fifth, and Nautilus sixth. The Derby Stakes. A sweepstakes of 20 boys, each, with 250 sovs. added, for three-year-olds. Colts, Bst 101 b; fillies, Sat 51b. Second horse to save hia stake. One mils and a half. Closed with 39 subs. Hon. E. Mr Campbell had some little trouble in getting the six away, owing to Luce refusing to face the starter’s flag. At last he managed to get them in line, and despatched the six on their journey, Sir Modred and Badsworth getting all the best of the start. Badsworth cut ont the running at a hot pace, closely followed by Sir Modred hard held, Lure and Virginia Water coming next. The Governor last but one, and Nautilus bringing np the roar. In this order they ran to the back of the conrse, when Sir Modred began to draw up to Badsworth, who had held a pretty long lead, with Virginia Water close on the quarters of Mr Campbell’s horse. This order they ran to the turn, Lnre, The Governor, and Nautilus running in the order named. This was preserved till the tnrn into the straight, when Derritt began to send Virginia Water along, and Badsworth dropping back. Sir Modred and tho filly shot ont with the lead, Mr Moorhonse’s colt laying third, Lnre fourth, The Governor still fifth, and Nautilus last. A splendid race ensued between Virginia Water and Sir Modred, ultimately terminating in a win for tho Hon. B. Campbell by a short length, Badsworth third, about a length and a half off, Lure fourth. Time, Imin 43secs. There were 132 £2 shares in the totalisator, of which twenty-two were on the winner.

THE CANTERBURY DERBY—WINNERS SINCE 1860.

For the C.J.C. Handicap ten came out, and for this Lo Loup was the favorite, though Foul Play and Betrayer had friends. The result proved the correctness of public judgment, as Ls Loup won after a capital race, with Fiscatorious second, Foul Play running third and Betrayer fourth. The time was the same as last year, when it was won by Chancellor. The Canterbury Jockey Club Handicap. A sweepstakes of 20 sovs. each, with 500 sovs. added. At the straight Piscatorious came up with Foul Play and Le Loup. The latter took the lead and held it down the straight, despite the plucky efforts of Piscatorious to win, with Foul Play third, and Betrayer fourth. Time—3min. 39) secs.
