THE STRAIGHT TIP.

By A Crank:? Tout. The following appeared in this morning’s issue of the “ Press.” We refer onr readers to the result of to-day’s races to see how far the “ Cranky Tout ” was correct : If you remember, Morton, you and me were sitting here As you and me at present are, this werry time last year. (Thanks, as you’re so pressing, I’ll have a glass of beer), If you will jog your memory ’twas over a bottle of wine That the old man gave you a good straight tip for the events of ’79. Just lock that door ; keep M 1 out, my information’s weighty, And I’ll see if I can’t put yon up to the winners of 1880. For tho Derby, James dear, the starters I hear are just about six in number, They’re all pretty fit (now don’t you split), very few are embarrassed with lumber. What’s that you say ? my tips never pay, my scanning and poetry’s bad, If my rhyming is poor, you can feel precious sure I won’t put you crooked, my lad. There’s a filly, some say, will be first in the fray, they call her Virginia Water, And the knowing ones swear, or shall we say they declare, that some racing swell has just bought her. But, never you mind what may be behind, though I know she’s a very good stayer, For my own part, should this filly start, I wouldn’t be backer, but layer. Tho Crisis Lodge colt, will, I fear, shoot his bolt before the whole distance is run. But should this not be, believe you me, the Derby we’ll find he has won ; Badsworth, my son, is a bit overdone; of Nautilus nothing I’ll say ; But of one thing I’m sure and that is that Lube will win the blue riband to-day.

The winner of the Handicap of course you want to know, It much depends if this big race is got through fast or slow. It may be that you fancy the reliable Foul Play, . Though Marie Antoinette, the jade, is better goods they say; Or p’raps from tips you may have got you think it would be glorious To see the blooming local tips burst up by Piaoatorious; Or have you heard, my festive James, do you believe it true That the Bussley representative is old Mermaid’s son, Lie Loup, Or would you think it silly could you deem that I could forge Any very good certificate in favour of Sir George.

Or is your opinion favorable of the Northern Mias Domett I cannot think (’twixt you and me) she will the distance get. But a f ruoe to chaff and talking, were I a heavy layer I almost think my little pile would go upon Betbayeb. But as the Bussley representatives are going on their merits (You can take my word for this, my boy, in spite of knowing ferrets) I’d take in case of accidents a shot (’tween me and yon) Upon that unsuccessful horse, the much abused Lb Loup. There are lota of knowing backers that are going for Foul Play, With nine stone on his back he’ll win from end to end they say, But I think there’s better nags than he, I can’t stand him victorious. So for my third string I take the lanky PISCATOEIOUS. Of the Welcome representatives that will make their bow to-day. Upon my soul (let’s have a drink) I don’t know what to say. The Bussley pair are going well; most fancy Hinomoa, But really this Louis D’or is quite as good a goer A little word to layers (Lor’ I don’t wish ’em any harm) Beware of Freddyl Matthews on Tradncer’a colt from Oharm. But one I like still better if she’s equal to her load, la the handsome Mermaid filly which her name it is La Modb. Should this come off I think ’twill bo most popular of wins, So hero’s good luck to Crisis Lodge and kindly Dr Prins I hope the racing may bo good, the weather nice and fine. And my tips as clinking good ’uns as those of ’79.
