MAGISTRATES' COURTS.
CHRIBTCHURCH. Monday, Novbmbbb 8. {.Before B. Weatenra and J. E. Parker, Esqrs., J.P.'s.] Dbunkbnness. —For firat offences two men wero fined ss. each. A. F. Norwood was fined ss. Forgeby ahd TJttbbin<j.—Fred. Cooper, on remand from the 4th, was brought np charged with this offence. The evidence in the case was taken on his last appearance. The police now asked to vary the information to one of obtaining goods on false pretences. The alteration was allowed. Mr J. T. Matson, in whose employment accused had been for some years, gave him a bad character as being an inveterate drunkard. He was then sentenced to six months' imprisonment with hard labor. The goods, he had obtained from Messrs Strange and Co., were ordered to be given np to their owners if, on farther consideration, the Bench found no bar to that course. Assault and Batteby.—ln Partridge v Scott Mr Stringer, for complainant, asked to be allowed to withdraw the information, pecuniary satisfaction having been given by defendant. Mr Turnbull, for defendant, concurring, the application was granted. In a similar charge against James Gerrard, for beating his wife, defendant was bound over in his own recognizance of £lO to keep the peace for three months. LYTIEIiTON. Monday, Novbmbbb 8. [Before J. Ollivier, T. H. Potts, and E. G. Sterriker, EsqTS., J.P.'s.] Hobsbs AT JjABGE.—W. Salt, Peter Fox, Q-. Austin, W. Holmes, were fined 5s each for allowing their horses to be at large. Bathing in Dampibb Bay. Walter Oroton, William Oroton, and Arthur Buchanan, three lads, were charged with bathing in a public place, to wit, Dampier Bay. They were cautioned and dismissed. Oiyh, Caseb. —Brown and vE. S. Bullen, claim £6 lis sd. Judgment summons. Ordered to pay half on December 4th and half on January 4th, in default fourteen days' imprisonment. George Ateyo vW. Austin, as agent for Geo. Yale, claim £lB 14s. Mr H. N. Nalder for the defendant, plaintiff claimed on a contract to repair a building for balance alleged to be due. Defendant refused, on the ground that plaintiff had not completed the work according to his contraot. Plaintiff nonsuited with costs.
