LEESTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting was held in the schoolroom on Wednesday, the 3rd inst*. Present —Messrs Barnett (chairman), Barrell, Sandry, Spring and Lunn. The chairman reported that the school had been closed for clweek on Wednesday, October 20th, as diphtheria had broken out in the school. On reopening the attendance was not satisfactory, and on consultation with Dr. Chapman and soma members of the committee and teachers, the school had been further closed for a fortnight. He also reported Dr. Chapman and himself had inspected the water supply, and in consequence they had written to the Board of Education, who had made a grant of £6. towards the cost of an artesian well. Mr Barrell proposed, and Mr Lunn seconded That with a viow to lessen the cost of books. suppliod to the children, the Education Board, should import a certain standard of books,, including copy and class books, &c., and supply them to all schools at prime cost, and that the committee are now haring a statement prepared showing what it now costs each, child per year, and the estimated saving by Boards importing the books themselves.” The secretary was instructed to send a copy of the above resolution to tho Board of Education. Mr Edge’s report was received. The following are extracts: —“In tho higher standards the results of this year’s examination are very unsatisfactory, but- considerable allowance may reasonably ba made for the interruption to the work occasioned by irregular attendance The staff is sufficient in number, but the master complains of tbo teaching qualification of the pupil teachers, stating that their work requires constant supervision. The children in standards Nos. 2 and I have made very fair progress, and their attendance reached a very fair average of proficiency. The general condition of the infant department is only very moderate.” After the report had been fully discussed, it was decided that the chairman should confer with Mr Ford, aud pick out six names to be summoned for norv attepdiffiOA at the school.
