[By Tbdbqbaeh.] [Per s.s. Wakatipu, at Wellington.] LONDON, October 27. William Herbert, bootmaker, of Melbourne, ■hot his paramour, Jane Messenger, at Finsbury park, and then attempted to commit ■nicide. A verdict of murder was returned. The Kurdish raids in Persia have developed seriously. Urrumah is unmollested. Mr Chamberlain, president of the Board of Trade, declares that the Government are bound to give 600,000 Irish tenants a right and interest in the soil. The Pope, in a recent allocation, shows a rapid change to a militant mood in the defence of his temporal rights. The proprietors of the “Morning Post” have suspended payment. The Czar is suffering from paralasis. He recently sent 10,000 roubles of his private fortune to Berlin. The latest Cape news, per Cotopaxi, from Cape Town to the 10th of October says that the attack on Nagotis was followed np by an attack of Nehans Hocka, a small station garrisoned by thirteen Europeans, under Mr Turmon and some twenty native police. Twice has the little band been opposed by a party of Basutos, estimated at three thousand men; but on each occasion the assailants have been beaten off. The position of the little garrison was, however, so critical, that it was determined to effect their relief, and on Monday last a column of some 300 strong marched in and brought out the garrison. The rebels opposed the march, but unsuccessfully, losing a number of men. The British loss was only one man killed and five wounded. Fine rains bad fallen, and the harvest prospects were good.
