SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
Ashley.—The monthly meeting of this committee was held on Monday last. Present —Messrs F, Oroft (chairman), F. Wright, B. O’Neill, G. Graham, and J. Fraser. The circular from the Board of Education re reduction in salaries, &0., was read and discussed, the reduction in pupil teachers’ salaries being unanimously condemned as unjust. The question of bringing the compulsory clauses into force was mooted but deferred for the present. It was decided to bold an entertainment in aid of the school treat fund on Friday, 19th inst. The chairman was instructed to secure the services of a master from another school to examine the school for prizes during the present month. After the transaction of some routine business the committee adjourned. South Eakaia. —This committee held its ordinary monthly meeting on Tuesday evening. Present—Messrs Tucker (chairman), Shellock, Cox, and Welsh, The Chairman stated that in accordance with a resolution passed at the last meeting he had had the gorse of the school fences out and the fences repaired, and also the outer offices removed, and that the work had been done to his satisfaction. It was resolved that the school be closed on the 9th inst, the Prince of Wales’ birthday. The master's report was read, in which he apologised for having been away from the school on a certain day, stating that ho had gone to Christchurch on the Saturday and bad missed the train on his return. It was resolved—“ That the master be written to and informed that should it happen again a formal complaint will be made to the Board of Education on the subject.” Lincoln. —The usual monthly meeting of the school committee of the above district was held on Monday evening last. Present— Messrs Herrick (chairman), Doherty, Wills, Wolfe and Bell, Letters were read from (1) Secretary to Board of Education; (a) salaries, &0., for October; (b) forwarding quarterly summary of attendances; (c) asking for information as to uses to which the schoolrooms were put during year 1879. (2.) From Mr J. Q. Walker, intimating that the additional gymnastic apparatus had been forwarded by instructions from Board. (3.) From headmaster, enclosing monthly report for October. (4.) From Mr Bishop, applying for use of schoolrooms for forthcoming bazaar in aid of parochial funds. The sub-committee appointed to inspect the condition of master’s dwelling-house furnished their report, and recommended that application be made to the Board for funds for repairs, painting and repapering. The committee resolved to make the application. The master’s monthly report, showing the attendance for the past month to be 85 per cent, upon the number on the roll, or boys 69 6, girls 56.2, total 125.8, was considered very satisfactory. Besolved—- “ That the use of the schoolrooms for bazaar, &c., be granted gratuitously.” “ That the ohiidren be asked to collect donations to defray coat of school picnic to be hold during ensuing Christmas holidays. “ That Messrs Doherty and Wolfe employ a suitable person to level school ground and cover the gravel with earth.” “ That during the summer months the committee meet at 7.30 p.m. instead of 7 p.m.” Sundry accounts were passed for payment.
