Hammick’s Bising Sun Hotel was diecovered to be on fire at 240 this morning. The inmates had a narrow escape, some having to escape by sliding down the verandah posts. The hotel, stables, and outhouses were completely destroyed. It is not known how the fire orginated. The insurances are—North British and Mercantile, £1000; United, £SOO ; Imperial, £SOO ; Union, £250 ; Colonial, £250. DUNEDIN, November 3. Lucky MenIn Cameron’s consultation the first prize goes to a country settler, the second to a Dunedin insurance agent, and the third to Jock Graham. INYBBOAEGILD, November 3. Economy. ’ The Bluff Harbor Board have reduced the secretary and chief harbormaster’s salaries, dispensed with the services of the third pilot, and reduced the wages of the boat’s crew. The saving will amount to some hundreds annually. The Time TableThe agitation re the time table is successful so far that on the northern line the old time table is in force. A Lucky Find. On Monday, a large whale ran ashore at Stewart’s Island, and was jammed between the rooks. Three tuns of oil were got out of it. Freemasonry. The Freemasons’ Lodges have agreed o n joint action to build a large new hall. AUCKLAND, November 2. Celestial Inebriety. A Chinaman named Ah Ji, of Hong Kong, was brought up to-day and fined for drunkenness. This is the first case in Auckland of a Celestial toper. Valedictory Address. Mr Beere, district engineer at the Waikato was presented with a handsome address by the public works officials on the occasion of leaving the district. The HarborWith reference to the proposed new dock at Calliope Point, North Shore, the Harbor Board have instructed their engineer to make trial borings as to the suitability of the site. Mr G. M. The Executive to-day decided not to inter* fere with the sentence on Ah Lee. DUNEDIN, November 2. Suicide. Sentence of Death Commuted At a meeting of the Executive Council held at Government House to day at noon, the cose of the Auckland murderer, Joe the Fijian, was finally decided. It being proved that he had suffered from insanity on two previous occasions, and there appearing reason to believe that he was not acconntaMe for his actions in this instance, it was resolved that he should be reprieved and the capital sentence commuted to imprisonment for life.
