GRAIN AND PRODUCE.

Only a moderate business has been done daring the week in wheat, the quantity offered being small, prices are firmly maintained at 4s 2d for good milling samples, whilst extra choice parcels for mixing are saleable nt a penny more In flour a fair trade demand has been experienced at .£ll for town, and .£lO 10s for country brands. Oats maintain the easier feeling noted in our last, and this will certainly not be improved by the telegraphic announcement that Mr Berry has increased, or rather brought in a Bill to increase, the duty on grain imported into Victoria from 6d to Is per cental. When replying to a deputation some eleven months ago, he said the duty on oats was la per cental less than it should be, and we have little doubt he will now make it what he considers it should be. The present rate of duty is 4d per bushel; and if our surmise is correct, the new rate will be Bd. so that our farmers will not look upon protection as one of the best features in the policy of Victoria, seeing that it is the largest outlet for New Zealand oats. Good samples of milling oats are still saleable at Is 6d to la 7d, and feeding grades at Is 3d. Malting barley is still freely placed at 3s fid for choice samples, and for lower qualities Is 9d to 2s fid are the prices offered by buyers. A few small lots of potatoes have been placed during the week at 15s. Butter is coming in slowly, farmers preferring to hold rather than accept prices offering. A moderate business has been done in cheese at 4d. Curers report a fair trade demand for hams and bacon at BJd bare, and 9d in cloth.
