THE MAYORALTY.
Sib, —The time is now close at hand when it will be necessary to nominate candidates for the Mayoralty of Christchurch. I have made many inquiries, but can hear of no other aspirants than Messrs James Gapes and Aaron Ayers. In common with many others, I think it a great pity that none of our leading citizens appear to hare sufficient patriotism to step forward at this juncture. There are many gentlemen who would do honor to the office of Mayor, who hare reason to thank God that they erer came to Christchurch. Some of them hare made large fortunes, and is it too much to expect that at least one of them would deny himself a little in order to oonserre the city interests and add dignity to the position of our chief magistrate. I hope, for the credit of the city, that some really eligible candidate will yet come forward and rescue the city from the impending misfortune of haring to elect one or other of the present candidates. The man who will now step into the breach will deserre the thanks of the citizens, and doubtless will be remembered in time to come.—Yours, &0., Akxibty.
