DIOCESAN SYNOD.
Tuesday, Octobbb 26. The Primate took his seat at 4 p.m. Several reports of Committees were read and laid on the table. Mr Qrigg moved—“ That with a view to maintaining the Christian character of Christ’s College, and in support of one of the fundamental objects of the founders of the institution, this Synod is of the opinion that it is necessary that the College Chapel shall be enlarged or rebuilt, and with a view to the work being undertaken as early as possible, that a Committee be appointed to sit during the recess of Synod for the purpose of conferring with and aiding the Governors of the College in proceeding with the work. The Committee to consist of the "Very Kev. the Dean, Canon Ootterill, Rev. W. 0. Harris, Bev. P. A. Hare, Messrs H. J. Tanored, B. J. S. Harman, C. 0. Oorfe, and the mover.” He thought it a high privilege that auoh an establishment existed where a combination of secular and religious education was taught the rising generation in these growing days of secularism. The object he had in view was to make such alterations to the chapel as to fit it for the increasing requirements of the College. Some little time ago a sum of nearly £BOO was contributed by comparatively few persons, and he understood that if an appeal was mode the necessary sum would be readily raised now. The Bev. E. G. Penny moved, as an amendment—“ That this Synod having regard to the important functions discharged by Christ’s College, in this diocese, and being of opinion that the chapel of the College is inadequate for its present and future requirements, strongly commends the question of enlargement or reconstruction to the governing body of Christ’s College.” Considerable discussion ensued, in which the danger of its being rued as a parochial church was pointed oat. Mr Qrigg haring replied.
The Primate was about to put the amendment, when Mr Grigg withdrew his in favor of the amendment, which was carried unanimously, it being understood that the appointment of a committee at an early date, as pointed out by Mr Grigg, was desirable. The Kev. H. G. Gould moved—“ That it be a recommendation to the standing committee to cause to be printed and supplied to each church and place, at the cost of the parish or parochial district, where service is regularly held, a book which shall embody the information required by the annual parochial return, each as the numbers of congregation and communicants, the amount of offertory, and the object thereof, at each service.” After discussion the motion was agreed to. The Eev. Canon Ootterill moved for leave to bring in a BUI [to provide instructions to Church officers appointed by the Bishop to superintend registration in parochial districts. Leave having been given, the Bill was read a first time, and the second reading made an order of the day for Wednesday. The seooud reading and committal was made an .order of the day for Wednesday. The Eev, W. O. Harris moved —“Thatthe Bill to amend the diocesan statute for constituting a Church-work Society be read a second time, and that it be considered in committee.” The motion was agreed to, and the Synod was moved into committee to consider the BiU.
