DRAINAGE BOARD.
A meeting of this Board was held yesterday afternoon. Present—Mr B. J. 8. Harman (chairman), and Messrs H. J. Tancred,,o. duff, H. J. Hall, J. B. Brown, P. Hobbs, J. V. Boss and W. White.
A letter of apology for absence was received from Mr Blakiston, who had besn summoned to attend the Supreme Oourt. Mr Atkins, of Sydenham, waited on the Board to apply for compensation for injury done to his property through the action of the Board in constructing a drain some time since. The matter was referred to the engineer and the member for the district (Mr White) to report. A complaint was received from Mr Eoach, of Knightstown, re a defective sump and a side-channel near his property, deferred to the engineer and Mr J. E. Brown, with power to act. The Chairman stated that there was no report from the engineer. A letter was received from the town clerk, of Sydenham, referring to the fact of a drain being choked in doing’s road. This matter had already been attended to. In reference to a letter from the Avon Boad Board touching the drainage of Carlton terrace, the Board resolved to reply that they do not feel themselves called upon to fill up the drain.
Another letter from the Avon Bead Board was received respecting tbe fencing of Dickinson's drain, to which the reply of the Board was that here were no funds available for doing the work. A letter was read from Mr McDonald, asking that the drain from New street to Moa Place be filled in ; another letter on the same subject was received from Mr Anthony, but he required that the drain should be kept open. The matter was referred to tbe engineer to report to the Board. Mr John Grierson wrote regarding the drainage of the subsoil of Bingslund. Mr Hobbs moved—“ That pending tbe next valuation of the Avon district, this Board have no power to rate that district beyond tbe limitation of Is in the £, which is at present ful y required to meet the current liabilities, but that the Board being anxious to carry out the work, will do so with the first funds available.” The motion was seconded by Mr Cuff, and after some discussion, carried. repost on jackson’s creek, near Wilson’s road. I examined same in connection with clerk to Heathcota_ Boad Board, and find that to take the water in an open cutting to pipe drain in William street would require to have, at the least, one chain of piping across an intermediate street, and then would be dangerous to foot traffic. By putting down the 9in sewer pipes as laid down in Mr Clark’s scheme, and connecting the same with present Ferry road sewer, it would supply drainage for the eighteen houses along its line, and would be doing permanent work ; it might be said that 9in is not sufficient, but if fresh storm water was backed up for a few hours in the old bed of the creek no harm would bo done, as I am informed that the bottom of Jackson’s Creek, on Wilson’s read, is about two or three feet above the crown of Ferry road, and could thus be carried by side drains. I may also mention that this view is most liked by tbe Boad Board and occupiers of the sections, and would not be a recurring charge for clearing out. (Signed) C. Cuff.
The subject matter of the report was referred to Messrs Cuff and White, with the engineer, with power to act. Several matters of a routine character were dealt with.
The following accounts were presented, and duly passed for payment:—Loan account, £1316 14s lid ; rate account, £llß 17s lid. The Board then adjourned.
