FIRE.
Shortly before two o’clock this morning a fire broke out in a five-roomed store in Ferry road, close to Mr Hale’s house, occupied by 1 a man named Neilson. The alarm was first given by a whistle from the railway sheds,, and was soon followed by the Liohfi |d street bell. A fresh breeze from S.W’., was blowing at time, and the building together with a stable at the rear were quickly reduced to ashes. The brigade were promptly in attendance, but the want of water prevented any attempt at extinguishing the flames. Both the 'store and stable were the property of Mr Hale, who states that the former was insured in the Victoria office for £175. He also believes that the other building is insured, but was not certain. He estimates thelos»at£4oo. The stable, which wag occupied by a man named Allen, contained some horses, but these were safely removed. Neilson, the occupier of the store, is quite unable to say how the fire originated, and owing to the rapidity with which the flames spread, he could not succeed in saving any of his effects, his watch and clothing being destroyed. The , stock was insured for £IOO in the Standard, but the furniture and other things were uninsured.
