LOCAL INDUSTRY.
There is now on view at the shop of Mr Urqubart, jeweller, Colombo street, a very excellent specimen o£ silversmiths’ work in the shape of a cup given as a prize by the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association for the reaper and binder contest of 1880. The cup, which has been manufactured and engraved entirely on the premises, is lUin. high and weighs 30ozs. The engraving, which has been executed by Mr A. Jones, is really excellent, and is worth looking at. On one side is a splendidly executed ongraving of the Johnstone Harvester, to which the cup was awarded at the trial. The various details of the machine are brought out with much skill and effect. This is surrounded by wreaths of ferns, wheat, barley and oats, the details of which are very artistically worked. On the opposite side is the inscription, which is encircled by a wreath of cereals. The inscription is as follows: “ Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association reaper and binder prize. Awarded to Johnston’s string-binding harvester at field trial hold at Avonhoad farm January 26th, 1880.”
