POLICE COURT.

CHRISTCHTJRCH. Wednesday, Octobbb 20. [Before R. Westenra and J. Inglis, Esq?., J.P's. Dbtjwkbnnbbs. Elizabeth Lynch was fined ss. Labcbnt.—John Jackson, alias Brown, alias Mason, &c, was brought up on remand from Lyttelton charged with stealing a ooat, valued at £2, the property of Jas. Griffiths, from the Zetland Arms Hotel, Ohnstchureh. The coat was produced by the police and identified by the owner, who had missed it on Monday last from the hotel. James Hill, licensee of the Mitre Hotel, Lyttelton, Btated that prisoner offered the coat to him as security for a loan of 5s whioh he solioited. The suspicions of witness were aroused and he took the coat from prisoner and handed it to the police. Constable Henry had arrested prisoner at Lyttelton, and charged him with stealing the ooat. He then said he had bought it six months before. Prisoner made a statement to the effect that he had bought the coat in Christohurch from a man who had a red blanket swag. The police described prisoner as a thief and begging impoßter, notorious in the Southern provinces. He had also been convicted in Ohristohuroh. He was sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labor. Another Case. Mienael Hogan was charged with stealing a pair of boots, worth £l, on Tuesday night, from the shop of Jas. Cawthrir.e, shoemaker, of High street, Christohurch. He pleaded guilty, saying he was drunk at the time he stole the boots. The police said he had been fined for drunkenness once, but had never been up for anything like this before. The Bench took a lenient view of the case, and a conviction being entered against him, prisoner was discharged with a severe caution.
