Thompson 2 CANOE EACE. J. O. Jones 1 J. E. Evans 2 L. M. Ollivier 3 The canoes started paddling a little distance above the boat sheds, and just after passing under the Bast belt bridge the canoeists had to tumble into the water, and swim and float their canoes about a hundred yards further down to the winning post. A capital neck and neck race ensued between Jones and Evans, the veteran finally catching the judge’s eye first by a short nose. Ollivier wai a good third bodily, but he had parted from his canoe and left it in the rear. Some little amusement was then caused by the efforts of the men to again seat themselves in their canoes. The feat was soon accomplished by Ollivier and Jones, who quickly paddled back to a drier and more genial element; but Evans got into difficulties, his canoe several times filling with water and nearly sinking. Finally the canoeist got back to the landing stage in safety, and soon joined his comrades in the dressing room.
