PREBBLETON SCHOOL COMMITTEE

This oommittee met on the 12th inst., when there were present—Messrs Anderson, J. W. Overton, Maskrey, Leadley, and Davis (ohairman). Correspondence was read from the Board of Education, giving eohedule of scale of reductions in salaries and allowances, after consideration of whioh the committee deoided that the chairman be requested to forward the following resolution to the Board of Education —"That this committee considers the reduction of salaries very oppressive iu its operation upon the assistant teacher in charge of the infant department, as, in consequence •£ the extra reduction of 7£ per cent, as a penalty for not holding a certificate, her salary will be reduoed to £43 15s, which amount the committee consider is not at all commensurate with the important duties discharged by her, in having the entire charge of the infant department of this sohool, to the proper conducting of whioh, in a great measure, is attributable tho future success of scholars in the standards; and that the Board be respectfully requested to reconsider the question of reduction in this exceptional ease." The chairman was also requested to draw the attention of the Board to the particular aptitude of the assistant to impart instruction to infants, as is shown by the complimentary terms in which the inspector has referred to her department in the past two years' annual examinations, and to say that in the event of her withdrawal the sohool would suffer to an extent that the oommittee did not care to anticipate. The monthly report was read, which showed 145 on the roll and a daily average attendance of 114, which the committee considered satisfactory. It was decided that the committee fall in with tho wish of the Domain Board by holding the annual sohool treat on the occasion of the public opening of the Domain in November. Other business of a routine character having been transacted, the meeting adjourned.
