CHRIST'S COLLEGE GRAMMAR SCHOOL.
ANNUAL SPOBTSi Judge—Mr C. C. Oorfe ; starters—Messrs E, A. Worthy and T. D. Oondell; timekeeper—Mr J. B. Harrison; committee —W. J. Ootterill, H. H. Lee, H. H. Mathias, W. G. Mellish, W. Studholme, O. T. Newton. Sbookd Day.
The morning broke unfavorably for the second day's sports, ominous clouds hanging low over the Port hills, and towards noon a nasty drizzling rain began to fall. It partially cleared, however, by two o'clook, and it wbb determined to go through with the programme if possible. A start was made under rather depressing circumstances at aoout halfpast two o'clook, shortly after whioh a number of visitors were on the ground, including ladies, who wore costumes suitable to the weather, and found ample employment for their umbrellas. The ground was in oapital order for running, as it was rather dry before the rain fell, and the sport was, on the whole, good, the boys being in good fettle after Wednesday's exercise, and were much fresher than they could possibly have been had the entire programme been gone through in one day. The experience of this year in which respect should, we think, induce the authorities to tako two days for the sports in future, especially in view of the long list of events usually made out on such occasions. An account of the various races is appended. Half-mile, open to boys under twelve. Second prize given. There were eleven entries. H. Beeves, 1; Oowlishaw, 2; J. Hawkes, 4. The starters were, D. Maclean, W. D. Harman, J. Hawkes, W. H. Guy, B. Lee, H. Beeves, E. Worthy, E. Oowlishaw, H. Fisher, and L. Rolleston. All got away well together, Harman leading off with a spurt, olosely followed by Beeves, with Oowlishaw a short distance behind, and Hawkes and Harman struggling hard for third place. They remained in this position till the finish, excepting that Hawkes picked up Harman and passed him coming up the straight, thus gaining third place. Time, 2min 42sec. Half-mile Handicap, open to whole sohool— Second prize given. The handicap was as follows :—W. E. Mellish and H. H. Mathias soratch; H. B. Mathias 10 yards, W. H. Langdown 10 yards, H. Haast 15 yards, G. Palmer 20 yards, C. A. Beal 25 yards, J. Tripp 25 yards, W. Hall 27 yards, W. Studholme 27 yards, B. Acheson 30 yards, J. D. Hall 30 yards, E. Griffith 32 yards, N. M. Orbell 32 yards, E. Lance 33 yards, 0. Torlesse 32 yards, G. Maitland 35 yards. C. Ootterill 36 yards, O. Borton 36 yards, A. Bolleston 36 yards, P. H. Cox 37 yards, T. Maude 38 yards, G. Clisssld 38 vards, H. Harper 38 yards, B. Dixon 38 yards, J. Bing 39 yards, F. G. Kimbell 40 yards, A. Delamain 40 yards, W. Helmore 40 yards, F. Tiffen 40 yards, F. Griffith 42 yards, O. Hamilton 43 yards, F. Hamilton 43 yards, B. Harley 45 yards, O. Archer 55 yards, H. G. Bristol 55 yards, E. Studholme 57 yards, W. Haloombe 60 yards, J. Studholme 60 yards. H. H. Mathias and W. E. Mellish, dead heat; G. Palmer, 2.
All got away to a good start, and a very in* tereiting contest ensued. Half way round the first lap some of the slow hands who had led off with a big spurt fell back, and the competitors began to settle down into position, Palmer leading, with Mathias coming up past Cotterill and Harman, and Mellish making headway towards first place. On passing the winning post for the second lap Mellish took second place, with Palmer at his heels, and this position was maintained for a couple of hundred yards, when Mellish (a little too late in his policy) put on the big spurt he had been lying back for, and a splendid struggle took place between him and Mathias, resulting, as indicated above, in a dead heat, Palmer coming in second. Tune, 2min 14£aec. 200 Yards, open to whole sobool. Mrs Studholme's cup, second prize given. Three started. W. Webb, 1; W. J. Cotterill, 2. Quarter-mile, open to boys under 16 years of age. Second prize given. W. H. Langdown, 1; J. Hall, 2 ; G. Beeves, 3. This was a fair race, but not so well contested as some of the others, although Hall and Langdown made the pace very hot towards the finish. Time, 62sec. 200 Yards Hurdle Race, eight flights, open to the whole school, run in heats. First Heat—o. Bowen, W. Studholme, Gh Palmer, O. Aroher, H. H. Mathias, and W. Helmore. Studholme, 1; Palmer, 2; Mathias, 3. This was a splendid raoe, being well contested generally, except in the case of Bowen, who fell out near the seoond hurdle from home. Time, 29aecs. Seoond Heat—C. Lee, W. Cotterill, 0. Newton, 0. Torlesse, and A. Delamain started. Newton, 1; Delamain, 2 ; Cotterill. Time, 31£secs. Final Heat—Studholme, 1; Newton, 2 : Palmer, 3. This event was observed with a great deal of interest, and the winner was loudly cheered. Cotterill fell at the second hurdle, and was out of the race. Time, 28secs.
Ladies' Challenge Cup, open to boys under 16. Second prize given—W. Langdown, 1; W. Helmore, 2 ; F. G. Kimbell, 3. This was a capital race between five boys, who made it pretty lively for each other in trying for one of the first honors of the day. The three first attracted the large share of attention, and they certainly ran well, Helmore showing tremendous pluck for a " little 'un," and being consequently a great favorite. Time, Smin 28£secs. Walking Race, one mile, open to whole school Seoond prize given ; twenty - six started. L. Tripp, 1; A. T. Rhodes, 2; H. H. Mathias, 3. This was also a good raoe. Tripp led almost from the first round, and kept up the pace beautifully; his form too was good, being equal to most first-class professionals in style; Rhodes, though a less pretty walker, covered the ground rapidly, and made it hot for the first man, whilst Mathias displayed equal valiancy, but had evidently exhausted too much effort in the early part of the race, so that he had no reserve force left for a spurt at the finish. However, be came in a good third, the others behind him being nowhere. Time—Bmin. 7secs.
The Consolation, open to boys under fourteen, was won by M. Stack ; A. Searell, second.
Consolation Bice, open to the whole school —4. Webb ; J. Newell, second. Old Boys' Eace thirteen started. L. Or. Hawkes (two yards) 1 ; A. G. Sheath (scratch) 2. This was the last event on the programme, and as usual was regarded with some interest and not a little amusement. Sheath was the favorite for first place, and Hawkes created not a little surprise by carrying off the honor. It was not done without a hard struggle, however, Sheath being not a yard behind him as he touohed the tape. At the conclusion of the sports the distribution of prizes took place, the open air being chosen in preference to the aohoolrootn this year, as the building was not large enough to accommodate the visitors. A number of forms were arranged in a circle for the ladies'
and Mrs Oorfe, who presented the prizes, sat at a table on one side.
Mr Oorfe, Principal of the College, made a few introductory remarks, in which he referred to a sad event that had taken place in their midst quite reoently, and expressed the sympathy felt for the bereaved family. Touching on the meeting just brought to a conclusion, ho congratulated the boys on its success, and was pleased to notice the interest which the day boys as well as boarders oonlinued|to take in these sports, and he hoped they would continue to be as successful as in former years. He also pointed to the fact that old College boys were distinguishing themselves in different paits of the world, which was a very interesting and encouraging circumstance.
The distribution of prizes waa then pro ceeded with.
O. Newton was the winner of the champion cup with 14 points, and three boys were equal for second place, namely, Studholme (secundue), MelJish, and H. H. Mathias. The successful competitors having received their prizes, three cheers were given for the ladies, and three for Mr Oorfe, and the proceedings were thus brought to a close.
