THE ENGLISH MARKETS.
The following is Messrs Miles Bros, and Co.’s Colonial Produce Report, dated London, August 27th:— WOOL. The third series of sales of colonial wool for the year commenced on the 17th inst., with the following quantities for offer : Bales. Now South Wales and Queensland ... ... ... ... 87,403 Victoria 48,984 South Australia... ... ... 13,114 Western Australia ... ... 738 Tasmania ... ... ... 14,428 New Zealand ... ... ... 89,866 Cape of Good Hope ... ... 71,682 Total 326,215 Of which about 17,000 Australasian and 21,000 Capes have been forwarded direct from ship to Yorkshire and the Continent. The sales opened with a good attendance of Homo and foreign buyers, and there was some spirit in the competition, nevertheless prices declined about id to Id per lb from June rates, hut the irregular assortment made it rather difficult to form a very accurate opinion as to the actual decline. Since the commencement some good flocks have been offered, and the market has become rather firmer, with an increased demand, and an accession of foreign buyers. Anything with a fair stylo is well competed for. Trade in the French woollen districts is still in an unsatisfactory state. WHEAT AND FLOUR. The wheat market has been dull, and prices have still further declined, for in face of the more favorable prospects of onr harvest outcome and the large supplies from America, which have amounted to 1,227,500 qrs to this country and the Continent during the past fortnight, our millers still abstain from purchasing in excess of their immediate requirements. In Australian a cargo on passage of 8800qrs, May b. 1., sold at 45s 3d, Australian terms: and for prompt shipment by iron vessel another has boon placed at 45s to Liverpool direct. New Zealand have not been in such brisk demand lately, our new English wheats having diverted the attention of buyers, and inferior parcels are difficult of sale. We quote on spot—South Australian wheat, 46s 6d to 47s 6d; Victorian, 46s to 46s 6d; New Zealand, long berried. 49s’to 50s ; ordinary, 43s to 45s 6d ; inferior, 38s to 43s per 4961b5. Australian flour, superfine, 33s to 355, and New Zealand, 30s to 32s per 2801bs. Oats, fine, 32s to 35s per imperial qr. ; common feed, 22s to 28s. TALLOW AND HIDES. The tallow market has fluctuated to some extent since onr last, the decline of fid per owt. last week having been more than regained today at public sale, when the competition was brisk|owing|to a large contract having to he supplied. Mutton was in strong demand, good to fair bringing 36s fid to 37s 9d, and fair to fine beef 31s to 34s 9d. 1189 casks were offered and sold. In hides, there was a good attendance of the trade at the auctions on the 19th inst., and all the Australians sold at an advance of Oid per lb. We quote Sydney, heavy ox, sfd to s|d, and light and cows, SJd to 5Jd. PRESERVED MEATS. There is still a good demand for tinned meats, and the smaller sizis go rapidly into consumption at slightly firmer prices ; compressed beef being freely enquired for. The supplies _ of fresh meat have been rather larger, bnt prices are weak. Bank rate, 21- per cent.
