SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting was held lest evening in tho Council Chamber at 7 o’clock. Present—His Worship the Mayor and all the councillors. A letter was read from the chairman of the Cemetery Board referring to the former letter, asking the Council to find part cost of forming and metalling the road to the cemetery at New Brighton. The clerk explained that he had written to the chairman the day after the first letter was before the Council, and could only suppose that it hed miscarried. On receipt of the second letter he sent a copy of the missing answer to Mr Jameson. Tho Board of Health wrote, advising the Council that nothing more can bo done at present in the alleged nuisance arising from Brighlling’s gravel pits. Messrs Wynn Williams and Deacon wrote applying for payment of £lO 5s 6d balance due for construction of bridge across the Eiver Heathoote.
Or. Hall said the contractors ought to be paid, aud the delay arose through a difficulty with the Heathcots Boad Board, who refused to pay their share. Finally the question was referred to tho works committee. A letter was received from Messrs Harman and Stevens, enclosing plan of proposed roads on rural section 62, ashing the Council’s approval of the same. The Council having unanimously approved of tho plans submitted, it was moved—“ That one month’s notice bo served on the owners of property fronting on that part of Junction street in rural section No. 13, under clause 210 of the Municipal Corporations Act.” Or. Joyce contended that notice should be given of this motion, and the resolution being carried on the voices, he called for a division, when the motion was carried by 8 to 2.
Tho secretaries of the Addington and Sydenham Cricket Clubs wrote asking permission to play on the recreation ground daring the cricketing season. On the motion of Cr. Charters tho letters were preferred to the works committee, with power to grant the application, subject to tho necessary regulations being made. The works committee reported that they had agreed to construct one of the new streets through rural section 17 at Mr Harman’s expense. Also, that Messrs Ford and Ogdon’s tender for drain pipes had been accepted ; that permission had been given to Mr Brightling to lower the level of Wilson’s road from the bridge to opposite Burnett’s nursery -at his own expense. That the approach to the bridge on the Gas Works road be also lowered in a similar manner, if the residents concur in same. Also, that Mr Coster be informed that unless the railway siding granted him be constructed within three months from date the permission given him will be rescinded.
After some discussion the report was adopted. On the motion of Or. Hall, it was agreed—- “ That it be an instruction to the works committee to place a footpath on the eastern side of the Windmill road; the road to be lowered and the path bo made to suit the levels of the properties on that side as nearly as possible.” The finance committee’s report showed the receipts for the past fortnight to be £526 8s 8d ; expenditure, £3OO 7e 91; credit balance at bank, £568 2s 81. The finance committee also stated :—“ It appears from a letter from the Treasury department that the greater part of tho impounded land fund having been paid to tho various Boards, and the Spreydon and Heathcote Hoad Boards having each received £349 5s sd, of which sum the Sydenham Borough Council is entitled to receive its fro rata share, in accordance with the agreements arrived at on severance, we therefore recommend that application be made to those Boards for tho borough’s share, tho amount due by Spreydon being £l9O Is 2d, and that duo by Heathcote being £79 19s 5d.” On the motion of Or.
