CHURCH WORK SOCIETY.
The first annual meeting of th* society , was held in St. Michael’s schoolroom, Durham street, on Thursday evening at half-past seven o’clock, the Most Rev. tho , Primate in the chair. There w< s only a moderate attendance, bnt a number of the clergy were present, and addressed the meeting, which occupied over two hours. The Chairman, in his opening remarks, expressed a feeling of regret that the financial position of the foeiety was not of a more satisfactory character, and that there was not a larger amount of unity and fraternal feeling amongst the members of the Church. A report and balance-sheet for tho past year were read and adopted, then followed several addresses by gentlemen present, and tho following resolutions were passed :—“ That as no permanent provision has been made for the stipend of the Rev. A. Davidson, an effort bo made to raise by subscription not less than £3OO, and that this be made a first charge upon the funds.” Also, “ That in view of the widespread prevalence of unbelief, all members of the Church bo urged to take steps to promote the circulation of sound religious literature, and to counteract tho influence of publications of a sceptical tendency.” The proceedings were opened and closed with prayer.
