MELBOURNE, October 7. Shipping. Arrived —The Union Company’s s.s. Rotomabana, from the Bluff. The tug Rescue has gone to the assistance of the steamer Albion, disabled off Wilson’s promontory. The Conference of Selector.(Delegates sitting at Sydney unanimously passed a resolution in favor of cessation of interest on unpaid balances on conditional purchases. The rush to Bermagni Beach, near Dega, continues, and nearly lour hundred are there. £IOO was paid for a one-eighth share in a claim near the prospectors’. The country inland looks favorable, and provisions are cheap and plentiful. In compliance with a requisition from a preliminary meeting, the Muyor of Sydney called a public meeting to consider the case of the “ Evening News,” which was fined £250 for contempt of Court. There has been a giod deal cf talk about paying the fine by general subscription. During the late terrible gale the Susannah Guddefroy, 1137 ton* register, with a cargo of 1070 tons of coal for Yokohama, drove ashore while endeavoring to return to harbor. She was totally wrecked. The captain, the mate, and five others of a crew of twenty-one were drowned. Toere were many remarkable features in the affair. The vessel leaked badly when sbe put to sea, and the nonstarting of the Newcastle lifeboat excited strung comment. MELBOURNE, October 2. A number of officers in the Lands Department have received notice of dismissal, and receive one months’ full play and a superannuation allowance. The Minister of Eil*ays stated to a deputation that the railway revenue annually falls £150,000 short of the interest on the capital invested. The Assembly assented to the Council’s request for a conference relative to the Payment of Members’ Bill, when it was arranged to divide the said Bill into two portions, one relating to the payment ot members of the Assembly, the other to those of the Connell* In the Council the former immediately passed, but the latter will probably be rejected. The number present in the Exhibition precincts on the opening day was 50,000, of whom 8000 paid for admission. It is estimated that 150,000 thronged the streets the procession passed through.
