New Zealand Loan, 1879-1904, 951. October 5. The Australian Eleven. The banquet given in honor of the Australian cricketers was presided over by tbe Lord Mayor. The AgentsGeneral and many leading cricketers were present. Mr Murdoch responded to tbe toast of the match played on the Oval, and thanked Lord Harris for having effaced past grievances. Lord Harris spoke in the most eulogistic terms of the cricketers, and considered that the Australians were pre-eminent at cricket. Sir Bartle FrereSir Bartle Frere, late Governor at the Cape, has arrived in London. The Albanian Question. Ministers have been busy discussing the Fortes scheme, hut nothing has yet transpired. It is understood that Prince Nikito urges an immediate attack being made by the Montenegrins. South-Eastern Europe. The details of the scheme proposed by the Porto for the settlement of the Montenegrin and other questions are now being published. The Sultan agrees to surrender Dulcigno on condition that the naval display is henceforth abandoned, and proposes afterwards to deal with the Greek and American questions. It is generally considered probable that the Powers will reject the Porte’s proposals. BERLIN, October 5. The German Free Ports. The German Government threatens to lay siege to Hamburg and Altona unless those two places comply with the new tariff. CALCUTTA, October 5. The Afghan War. Latest advices from Afghanistan state that General Phayre’s division winters at Candahar.
