CANTERBURY CHESS CLUB.

The first annual general meeting of the Canterbury Chess Club was held last evening at the Commercial Hotel. The president, Mr H. J. Tanored, occupied Che chair. The secretary road the balancesheet and annual report of the club. The year’s receipts were stated to bo £26 7s fid, and the expenditure £25 13s sd. showing a credit balance of 14s Id. Assets £l6, liabilities nil. The report congratulated the club on the progress made during the year. The number of members is twenty-five, the average attendance on club night* being eight. The match Married v Single had resulted in a victory for the Benedicts, The tourney, though arranged on the cutting down principle, did not secure the desired result, as it was begun in May and was only finished in September, there being fourteen competitors. The winners were Mr Moore of the second class, who took first prize, viz., the silver cup given by Mr Malcolm, the second prize being won by Mr Yeel The report and balance, sheet wore unanimously adopted. The election of office bearers for the ensuing year resulted as follows :—President, Mr H. J. Tancred ; vice-president, Dr. Ellis ; secretary, Mr Jacobsen; treasurer, Mr Horwocd j committee, Messrs Veol, Mainwaring, Moore, Hookham, and Smith. The president then presented Mr T. Moore with the silver cup recently won by that gentleman, hoping that it would act as an incentive to further exertions in the noble game of chess, to which the recipient suitably responded. A vote of thanks to the chair concluded the proceedings.
