OUR NEW GOVERNOR.

The valedictory remarks of the Fiji “Times” are by no means complimentary to Sir Arthur Gordon. Our contemporary declares that he has signally failed in redeeming any one of the promises he made in the speech delivered on his arrival in the colony, and concludes a lengthy article with the following peroration: wonder then that the news of his approaching departure was lately hailed with such universal manifestations of delight ; that a glad smile of satisfaction irradiated every countenance as the tidings made the rapid round of the community, and that hearty hand shakes, sa upon an unexpected accession to good fortune, became the order of the day. It would have been much more pleasant to have parted with Sir Arthur in the same spirit that the colonists of Now Zealand will part with Sir Hercules Robinson, but, as it is, he will pass from amongst ua unregretted, but —never to be forgotten.” The Wellington “Pest” takes up the cudgels on behalf of Sir Arthur, and, in order to throw some light on the real motives which inspired this attack, mentions that the Fiji “Times” is not only the organ of the planters, among whom Sir Arthur Gordon admittedly had made himself unpopular by his enforcement of strict justice towards the Natives, but is also the Lovuka journal ; and his Excellency has boon guilty of what no doubt must have appeared to the Levukans shocking bad taste, if not absolute malevolence, in indicating a preference for Suva as the capital of the Fiji colony. Our contemporary has every confidence in the fairness, good sense, and good feeling of the colonists, and feels satisfied that Sir Arthur Gordon will receive as hearty a welcome in Now Zealand as if he had been lauded instead of denounced by the Fiji planters and Lovuka organ.
