ASHBURTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

At the meeting of the above Council, held lost Monday, the Mayor stated that a sum of £22 13s 3d was to the credit of the Council. A letter from Messrs Brunson and Purnell was received, stating the terms on which they would accept the position of Borough solicitors, and, on the motion of Or. Ivess, they were appointed. Or. Bullock moved that concrete reservoirs bo constructed within the borough for the purpose of supplying water in case of fire, but after some discussion it was agreed to leave the matter in -the hands of the works committee and the engineer to ascertain the cost of the work. Or. Ivess moved —“ That the services of the town clerk be dispensed with at the expiry of his present engagement, and that the offices of borough surveyor and town clerk be amalgamated at a salary of £2OO per year. Applications from gentlemen willing to discharge the duties to be invited by advertisement in the

Christchurch and Ashburton papers, to bo considered by the Council on October 18bh.” As an amendment, Or. St. Hill proposed “ That a committee be appointed to consider the advisability of retrenchment in the Council’s expenses, the committee to consist of Ors. Williamson, Bullock, Parkin, Roberts, Friedlander, Ivess, and St. Hill, to report at next meeting,” and after some discussion the latter proposition was carried. A vote of thanks was accorded to Cr. Roberts for his exertions in respect of the recent demonstration, and the Council having transacted some further business adjourned.
