NEW RAILWAY TARIFF.
The " Gazette ” of October Ist contains a new scale of fares and charges on the Now Zealand railways, which comes into operation on the 11th inst. Part I. deals with passenger rates, which are unaltered ; Part 11. with luggage, parcels and horsesj Part 111, has to do with goods, and fixes the rate per mile for the different classes. We have compared those with the rates now existing, and give below a few of the results :
In class K (timber) the increase is, except for very long distances, 3d per 100 superficial feet. Under the heading “local rates ” we find that on the Christchurch and Lyttelton line the charges have been raised for merchandise as follows :—from Lyttelton to Christchurch, when sent to private sidings, from 6s 9d to 6s lid. The rate for goods on the Port Chalmers’ line is 5s 7d, and on the Bluff line 2s 6i per ton. There is a spesial rate for wool between Timaru and Lyttelton as follows : —ss 8d per bale undumped, 10s per bale dumped. An alteration has been made in the through rates for passengers and goods between Christchurch and Dunedin. The passengers’ fares are now to be 41s 6i for first class, and 30s for second class. The old rates for goods from Dunedin to Christchurch were for class A, £4 5s ; class B, 65s 10a ; class C, 46s 8d ; class D, 36s 3d. The rate for these classes will now be 39s 3d. For class E (agricultural produce) the rate will bo 23s lOd per ton. There is also a through rate from Christchurch and stations on the Lyttelton line to Oamaru andefee versa, of 32s for classes A, B, 0, D ; and of 19j 4i for class E. From Christchurch and stations on the Lyttelton line to Timaru and vice versa the rate for A, B, 0, D is 23s lOd, and for class E (agricultural produce) 15s. The rate from Dunedin to Timaru is 30s 3d for classes A,B, 0, D, and 17s 7d for class B Ships’ goods of classes A, B, 0, D, landed at Lyttelton for transhipment as per bill of lading to Timaru, Oamaru, or Dunedin, or at Port Chalmers for Oamaru, Timaru, Christchurch, or Invercargill, or at Bluff for Dunedin, Oamaru, Timaru, or Christchurch, will bo charged ns class B, the charge to be by weight or measurement at the option of the department.
