James Hill, who appeared yesterday in a drunken state to answer a similar charge, was fined 10s. Richard Harper was fined 20a. Wilful Damage to Pbopeety.— Richard Moore pleaded “ Guilty ” to being illegally on the premises of the Empire Hotel, Christchurch, and damaging property thereon of the value of ss. Richard Richardson, the landlord of the hotel, stated that at six o’clock this morning ho found the prisoner on the floor of a store room in his house, The door had been burst open, which constituted the damage in the charge. Prisoner was fined 20s and ordered to pay damages ss, or in default one week’s imprisonment. Laecbny. —William Payne was charged with stealing firewood, value 4s, the property of Thomas Roberts, Woolston. The prosecutor said he believed the prisoner to be

mad. Ho had developed a pilfering propensity to such an extent, that he went about picking up trifles of all kinds in the neighbourhood. Ho did this in the presence of the owners, and this case had been brought to put a stop to it. He had been in respectable circumstances, and held a captain’s certificate in the merchant service. The police said prisoner had been charged with insanity only a short time ago, when he was examined by two doctors, who pronounced him sane. Bemanded 'till to-morrow for medical examination.
