NEW ZEALAND AND AUSTRALIA.

At the present time, says a contemporary, many persona—and more particularly of the working classes—are emigrating to the sister colonies in the hope of bettering their condition. There is a possibility that they may be able to do so, but there are also many chances against their being able to do as much for themselves in any of the Australian colonies as they can in Now Zealand. This will be apparent when it is mentioned that in the colony of Victoria alone the number of unemployed is considerably in excess of the same class in this colony, and whereas in New Zealand the Government provide work, at a nominal rate perhaps, in Victoria the relative position of affairs is quite altered—work is not provided for those who like to apply for it. It will thus bo seen that in Victoria the working man will not readily find a means of subsistence. The other colonies are perhaps not quite so bad as Victoria in this respect, but still they are ra better than New Zealand. The stagnation which exists in all branches of trade here also exists there, and a revival is just as likely to take place at no distant da.e in this colony as in any of the others. A gentleman who was in trade in Oamaru some years ago, and who has since then resided in two of the Australian colonies, has returned to that town, and he says that as regards steady business there is no town on the other side so good as Oamaru, and that none of the Australian colonies are equal to New Zealand.
