CANTERBURY ANGLERS’ SOCIETY.
The annual general meeting of this society was held last evening, at tho Commercial Hotel, Cathedral square, Dr. Campbell in the chair. There was a good attendance of members. The Chairman described the experimental trials in the Waimakariri by Rav. J. D. Forgusson, Messrs M. Cunningham and W. S. Cooke, and himseli, to determine the question of the acclimatisation of the salmon in that river. He characterised the subsequent meeting held by the residents of Kaiapoi on tho matter as a mistake, seeing that the successful acclimatisation of salmon and trout in our rivers would result in a large source of future revenue. The secretary read the report and statement of receipts and expenditure. Tho report regretted that the society had not been more largely patronised, os only a small proportion of license holders were members of the society. As a means to increase the number of members, it suggested that owners of private property bo asked to give members of this eooioty the privilege of fishing in tho same. It congratulated tho society on tho successful acclimatisation of Californian salmon in the Waimakariri, and concluded by hoping for a large accession of members in the ensuing year. The accounts showed a credit balance of £1 8a Bd. The report was adopted. On tho motion of Mr Oogan, it was resolved—“ That this society respectfully suggests to the Acclimatisation Society the advisability of placing soma trout during the ■ present season in tho Hororata, Little River, ! Hart's Creek, Leeston, and an excellent trout stream at Southbridge.” Mr Cook moved—- “ That it be recommended that the opening day of the fishing season be on the 16th October, instead of the 18th October.” Carried. The election of officers resulted as follows : —President, Dr. Campbell; vice-pre-sidents, Rev. J. D. Fergusson and Mr W. S. Cooke ; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. F. Wachsman ; committee, Messrs R. T. Searell, T. E. Gwatkin, W. McWilliam, G. G. Bridges, M. Cunningham, E. F. Cogan, and M. Stoddart.
