Addington Methodist Cht/bch. The September quarterly meeting of the United Methodist Free Church, Addington, was held on Wednesday last. There was a goodly gathering of the members to tea, after which the cirouit business was transacted. A special effort during the quarter had extinguished the circuit debt of £22, and the current income was slightly in excess of the expenditure. Correspondence from the Christchurch circuit relative to the promotion of the interests of Free Methodism in this district, and concerning arrangements for the approaching district meeting was dealt with. The Rev. J. White received and accepted a unanimous invitation to labour in the cirouit the next year. Representatives were appointed to the district meeting, to be held in Christchurch during the third week in January next. Gisboenb Oil Spbings.—A gentleman at Gisborne, writing to a friend in Wellington, says :—" We have our oil springs now started by a Sydney company, which will turn out a suocess if they strike good oil, and in that case town property will go to a very high price. There is a good deal of speculation just now in the company's shares (6d paid up), and they are selling at Is to Is 3d premium. The worst of it is, nearly all the shares are owned by the big American capitalists in Sydney, and they will not part with them. They would only let us have 6000 out of 50,000. They think they will be able to strike oil in about eii months. Things have been very dull here for a year—no money in tho place—but the town will look up during the coming summer." A " Bra " on the Savings Bank.— The numbers of working-men who left for Australia by the Hero and the Wakatipu last week (says the " New Zealand Times ") took with them, in the aggregate, a large amount of capital. During the early part of the week there was quite a " run " upon the Post-office Savings Bank, and the number of £3O, £4O, and £SO deposits withdrawn in so short a period was wholly unprecedented. Standing upon their Dignity.—Yesterday tight of the armed constabulary at present quartered on Ripa Island in charge of the Masri prisoners were suspended from duty fur insubordination. The nature of the offence appears to havo been a refusal to carry provisions for the use of the prisoners from the jatty to the storeroom. Superintendent Broham was at the Island nt the time, and after falling the men in, asked them severally whether they refused to obey the order given, each one answering in the affirmative. All the latest improvements in the internal fittings of stabling have boen introduced, and when finished the range will be one of the most complete in the city. When it is mentioned that Mr John Boecher, who is 100 well known here to need any further comment, is the leasee, nothing is necessary to be added as to the way in which they will be carried on.
