BKUTAIi ASSAULT. Josiah Bagnall wag brought up on warrant charged with commit t ng a violent assault on John long, landlord of the Heathcote Valley Hotel, who appeared with his face frightfully disfigured, and now stated that on Thursday night accused was singing an obscene song in the bar of the hotel, witness asked him to desist, whioh ho refused to do, and after a few words prisoner sprang over the counter unexpectedly, and struck Long in the face, rendering him for a short time insensible. A witness who was on the spot corroborated the above evidence. Dr. Townend described the nature of the injuries sustained by the proseoutor. He could hardly believe he blow was given by a man's fist a'one. Prisoner admitted the offence. His Worship said the Valley had acquired an unenviable | notoriety for rowdyism, which the Bench was determined to do its best to put down. Prosecutor had been promised the support of the Court if he endeavored to purge the hotel of the bad name it held, and prisoner for behaving himself in the brutal manner he had would be now made a first example of—the treatment offenders of his stamp might expeot. Ordered to pay doctor's fees £3, witnesses expenses £1 4s, and costs of court, amounting in all to £4 9a; in default to be imprisoned for one month with hard labor.
