THE DECAY OF THE EMPIRE CITY.
The following is nn extra ot from a private letter recently received in Timaru from a business man in Wellington—" Wellington is very poor. We have a large working and useless population, but really no moneyed people. Iu foot you would be surprised what a miserable place it is considering that it is the seat of Government The only people who do enjoy themselves a little are the middle olass, and just now they are all at their wits' ends to make both ends meet. In •11 my travels I never saw Buch bad times as exist in Welling'on at present, and it will be years before the place recovers. The population bas decreased at least 4000. There ore over 400 houses empty. Bents are reduced from 80s to 15* por week. Land has fallen from £ls to £7 per foot, and I see no sign of a rise taking place. No building, no work, and the people clearing out daily ; such is the present state of the Empire City. Thero is, however, plenty of money in the hands of solicitors to advance on mortgage, but no security is forthcoming. ____^__^__^_.
