PUBLIC MEETING AT SOUTHBRIDGE.
A publics meeting was held in the Royal Hotel,. Southbridge, on Tuesday evening, for the purpose of discussing the proposed removal of the Post-office to the Railway Station. Mr J. B. Campbell, who occupied the chair, observed that the finances of the colony were in anything but a satisfactory state, and thought that any Government who set themselves to work honestly to retrench deserved the support of the ratepayers. Mr F. Deßidder, having addressed the meeting, moved the following resolution:—" That in the opinion of this meeting it is against the best interests of the township and the convenience of its inhabitants to remove the Post-office to the Bail way Station." Mr E. G. Stavtly seconded the motion, whioh, after some discussion, was carried. Mr Stavely moved—" That as the Bail way Station is situated on the wrong side of the line, and as the approach to it is dangerous and unfit for pedestrians on winter nights, it is most important that, if any alteration takes place, the Biilway Station should be removed to the most approved site adjoining the present Post-office." The motion was seconded by Mr Henry Paddy and carried. Mr A. Cameron moved the next resolution—" That as the cost of the removal of the Bailway Station would be but little more than that of removing the Post-office, the immense advantages the removal of the railway station would confer upon the township and the neighbourhood generally for all time should amply justify the Government in acceding to the wishes of the inhabitants." Mr Chas. Patterson seoonded the motion whioh was put to the meeting and carried. Mr F. de Bidder moved—" That a petition embodying the previous resolutions and signed by the chairman, members of this meeting, and inhabitants of the township, be forwarded to the Hon. John Hall, praying that previous to any alteration of the respective sites he would give the subject his most earnest consideration relative to the permanent inoonvenience the removal of the postoffice would occasion to the inhabitants of the township and surrounding district." This resolution having been seconded by Mr Paddy was carried unanimously. A vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the proceedings.
