THE ALLEGED EXODUS.
[By Telegraph.] [prom our own correspondent.! WELLINGTON, September 28. In order to ascertain whether the reports of the wholesale exodus of laboring classes is well founded or not, the Government have had returns prepared showing the total number of arrivals and departures during 1879 and 1880, np to 31st ult. The return ii as follows : - During the year 1879, 23,957 persons arrived and 5234 left, therefore the balance in favor of the colony is 18723 During 1830, up to September 10th, 10,029 persons arrived and 4740 left. • a balance in favor of the colony of 5289. The total number of Government immigrants in 1879 was 10,311; in 1880, to September, only 1918. During the current year 3848 have arrived from the Australian colonies and 3765 left for Australia. This proves the stories about the wholesale emigration of workirg classes to be mere canards. The Wellington “Chronicle” stated that 50,000 had left the colony in a year, and it was also alleged that 700 houses were vacant in Wellington. A careful official investigation proves that there are only 256 empty buildings in the whole city, and most of these aro of a very inferior class.
