A distinguished and long-winded Paris lawyer lately defended a criminal unsuccessfully, and at the end of the trial the judge received the following note:—" Tho prisoner humbly prays that the time oocupied by the plea of tho counsel for tho defence be counted in the sentence." Experiments with the telephone, by which the exact direction of sound given by foghorns or fog-bells may be ascertained, proved that it was easy to ascertain whenoe the sound came from a distance of from four to six miles. At a late sale in Pari* a book by a modern binder, Trantz-Banzonnet, a master of the art of inlaying, sold for £640, of -which at least £440 was paid in respeofc of the binding. In "Wurtemburg, r where capital punishment has been in abeyance since 1866, a man named Kapp has been hanged for the murder of his former master and mistress.
